What are the numbers on the back of the coil?

I am trying to locate some replacement coils for my 84 Mariner 90hp I6 and I was curious as to what the blue green looking numbers mean on the coils. Of the six I have four have the number 1364, one is 0025 (it has a metal contact going from the ground to the ferrite core) and one is with white numbers reading 0229 and then 338 7370. Any clues? Here is a photo of another set that looks like mine but the numbers are different. Notice three 1706 and one marked 1716? What gives?

Well, I could only wait soooo long. I ended up buying Part number: 7370A19 / A13. I hope it works. I think they came off of a 90's six cylinder but I could be wrong. Maybe its from two different three cylinders. I noticed someone had new ones on bay for $26.00 each NOS (Replaces part number 339-7370A13 and 339-832757A4) but they were several models earlier which have been superseded. I wasn't sure what the reason was for changing them (technology or material change?) but either way I decided against buying the possible late 70's or 80's NOS. The picture is what I ended up buying. I hope they have the wires as well as I could use a newer set that go from the coils to the switch packs.

The reading from - to coil wire is 1 plus 2 small lines. I know these coild are good. There from a `40 HP 4 cyl. but the numbers are different. Mine are 3081. I wouldn,t figure they would be much different unless you had a CDI High output stator. Your gona have to try to change the oute case to get them to bolt on. Looks like your out mounting brackets would have slliped righ on the ones i have

Why are you replacing coils as failure rate is very low....

The main reason was that four out of the six coils in the current motor had cracked ferrite cores. I realize that I can take the good ferrites and make a couple of good coils but I prefer having a few extra hanging around the shop just in case. I was thinking that since my Ignition Coil Primary Wire set was looking rather faded and cracked, that the used set of coils from a mid 90's set looked much better than mine. Since the price was only $40.00 I thought I couldn't go wrong having six warranted against DOA coils, six extra plug wires (good for comparison to current wires or emergency replacement) and the coil to switch box wires. I am going to make some new Coil ground wires and with the "newer than mine" coil to switch pack wires I felt that I was narrowing the path of possible problems. Personally I would like to make everything electronic new but I just don't have that much money laying around and I don't really know the full condition of the motor. $40.00 spent is cheap when compared to buying them new. Once I win the lottery I will replace them with new ones ...

I must admit that I really like the newer style ignition coil covers that came with the used coils. This seems to have come off of a V6 motor and fits perfectly on my L6 motor plus they are made of a rubbery feeling plastic. Now I can get rid of the aluminum ones with the oxidation.
