What are the odds of this?

My dock has mooring whips. In the last 20 years I have unhooked the whips, untied the lines and pulled away in my 19' Searay Bowrider, thousands of times, without a problem. Two years ago I trade the SeaRay for a 21' SeaSwirl Bowrider.

During those two years with the new boat, the rear mooring whip has caught on the rear cleat, the washdown fitting, the net and a whole bunch of other stuff, while I am pulling away from the dock. This never happened on the SeaRay. Now both boats have the same hardware on them, and about the same chance of catching stuff, I would think. Why is that I now need to expect the whip line to catch on something? I have torn the mooring whip off the dock three times already!

Maybe the extra 3 feet makes a difference. Try anything, but maybe moving one of the whips to accomondate the new boat length.
Glad no one has gotten hurt.

Are the gunwalls the same height on both boats?

Re: What are the odds of this?

Joe, The gunwales on the 21 footer are higher. That may contribute, but I am not sure.

Injun, the 21 is quite a bit wider. Perhaps the whip line is inside the boat more, and that is why it catches. That seems likely. I am not sure what adjustment I can make. I like the boat as far away from the dock as possible, since we have storms that push the boat into the dock.

It was one of those things I did not have to think about. Now I need to add it to the stuff I worry about when leaving the dock.

Thanks for the feedback...
