What are these parts on this power tilt/trim?

What are these two polished rods sticking out of this power tilt unit? Do they move in/out to tilt the motor? If so, then what does the big slave with the tubing connected to its top and bottom do?

Also, I think the motor is white, but what is the can shaped piece opposite from it? The oil reservoir?

Thanks,

Mark
The 2 small ones are for trim. After the motor gets to a certain height the larger one takes over and does the tilt part.

The two shorter rams are the trim rams used for trimming the motor while underway. The larger one is the tilt ram which tilts the motor up farther and faster for trailering. the white can on the left is the motor. The hydraulic fluid reservoir is on the right.

Re: What are these parts on this power tilt/trim?

Thanks for the responses!

I see these tilt/trim units for about $200. I was toying with the idea of replacing the manual tilt/trim cylinder on my 40hp with ram from one of these power tilt/trim units. The motor and oil reservoir could be mounted inboard with stainless lines run to the ram.

I'm not really looking for a power trim setup. What I need is a power tilt that would lift the motor up and out of harms way when I go speeding into shallow areas or approach the shore to beach the boat. I want something I can operate from the helm.

I'm wondering if the ram alone would work on my smaller motor as a power tilt or if it needs the trim rams to help lift the motor past a certian point where it becomes more balanced and less load on the main ram.

I know these units are for motors weighing hundres of pounds more than my 40. Any thoughts on the capability of the main ram for my idea are greatly appreciated.

Mark.

The reason they have 2 sets of rams is because the tilt rams can't tilt the motor while it is under power with forward thrust. The small rams (trim rams) have the power to do that. I don't think you could set it up with just one of the rams. It would need all of them. My motor (89 J 50) only has one tilt/trim ram. The trim works for the bottom 15 degrees and then it's in tilt mode. If you try to trim up, with any rpm over 2000 past magic 15 degrees the motor will just settle back down.

It might be a good idea to check out the after market trim plates. I understand they work quite well.

You could wait until you find a unit that would fit you motor. It might be like mine. Not sure when and or if they ever changed to the double ram system for the smaller motors. Also, the newer system like mine fit inside the transom bracket unlike the old ones which were outside.

Thanks Dave,

The after market trim plates are too expensive, and require the motor to be offset about 6 or more inches.

I just want to be able to tilt the motor up remotely. The power unit for my motor sells for 400 or more used. So that puts it out of the budget.

If I get find a ram in good shape, there are nice 12v power pumps available that would operate it.

Thanks again,

Mark

Good luck. I'm just thinking that by the time you have somthing customized for your motor, it may well end up costing a bunch more than a used unit or after market unit.

You should be able to fit that type of unit without changing anything....just add some wires!
I have a 79 chrysler 70hp outboard that I added the trim unit from a 90 force...this was a direct fit..
