What are these snipped wires for?

Just getting to know this motor - 90hp Merc 1987 vintage (0B1744...S/N)

Noticed these two wires have been cut; they seem to connect to a terminal stud. One is a tan color and the other is either black or very dark blue.

Any clues what they're for, or used to be for??

Tan is generally a overheat sensor. Black is usually ground.

The 3 cylinder Merc 90 motors show a temp sender.
