My brother got me an "In Fisherman" subscription for Christmas and I've been watching their shot on the Sportsman Channel on Directv (ch: 605). I like it ok but don't have much to compare anything too. What do you watch or read?

I love watching "RIVER MONSTERS" on Discovery......he catches some really weird fish that I thought existed only in horror movies......of course he does get a bit dramatic at times but the series is well worth watching and each episode is a thrill from start to finish! I especially like the weird looking one in the pic attached

I'll second the River Monsters. The guy is wacked, but the show is interesting. Also enjoy any show with Bill Dance ... he is just a good ol boy. I also like the Match Fishing. Where they pit one pro basser against another and they go head to head, same boat, can't cross the center line of the boat. 6 hours of fishing divided into 1 1/2 hour quarters. Anglers take turns at the front of the boat. Interesting to see how they respond to the different situations.

River monsters regularly. The other fishing shows seem to be too much commercials. 1/2 hour show is probably only about 15 minutes or less of fishing after you skip the ads and promos within the show.

I was fond of Tred Bartas fishing shows when they were on and Larry Dahlbergs "Hunt for Big fish". Bill Dance can be annoying, but he does have good advice. I like Hank Parker also.

I like John Gillespie's Waters & Woods. I think it's local to Wisconsin but DVD's are available from the site.
Every week is a new show, no repeats. He fishes all over Wisconsin and neighboring states.
A very informative & entertaining show, and I don't even fish much.

Re: What are your favorite fishing shows or magazines?

Hi all,
Learned a few things from that old freshwater fishing show that I can't remeber the name of-lol, But I do remember the guy's name: Babe Winkleman. In one of his shows he explained something that really had a positive effect of my catch/off rates.

Simply how to sharpen a hook, even if new. He demonstrated, using a hook file, how to sharpen a hook from a round head into a triangular head.
After learnng his trick, my catches v. losses went up up 5 fold. In /83, I snout-snagged two musky (sameday within 20 min of each other) and brought them in.

Put them back as they were under weight and out of season but what a fight and I was so surprised both were snagged. Anyway, hook sharpening using the triangulation method apparently (and I agree) breaks the surface or cartlidge barrier easier that a sharp round point hook. Thanks Babe Winkleman !

Kayak Fisherman, Fly Fishing the World (although I don't enjoy it as much with the new host; a little too heavy on the West Coast amped up soul patch effect for my taste), Bill Dance Outdoors, all sorts of shows on WFN. Anybody remember Virgil Ward?

My favorite is not on TV anymore that I know of....Fish Fishburn. If I could pick one guy to fish with, I think it would be him.....or Guy Harvey.

I don't do any of the national TV hunting or fishing shows, they are not what I do or practice when I engage out there. I like local (Michigan) news rags that provide how to stuff I can use when I get out. But the canned antler hunting and tourney fishing shows turn me off, and I have nothing in common with them. I enjoy online websites that are local too.

Re: What are your favorite fishing shows or magazines?

To go back to the OP situation,

In Fisherman is a great magazine. I had a subscription for a few years. The focus that they make is that a small variation in presentation is what separates a good fisherman from a great one. Things like what line, what weight of hook, or what type of terminal tackle. My problem is that the articles are written for such specific conditions that I never really feel like I am learning anything that I can use. Of course I'll admit that I have pretty much mastered the best techniques for our local fisheries.

Similar to how I have only a few methods that I have a hard time varying from, I've noticed that the main guy (forget his name) in "the in fisherman" really only relies on a few fundamental rigs. As I recall he is really into those rubber swim baits, frilly jigs with a football head, and Rapalas.

I must admit however that when you are constantly trying to figure out new water and you need to catch fish for your TV show and magazine articles you have got to stick with what works for you. Trying new techniques on unfamiliar water can lead to some pretty short articles.

"He'll go six!" Said of a fish that would need a belly full of lead sinkers to top 2 lb.
