Hi,

I was thinking of a used boat that I could afford - 20' in length and under $8k. Are the 1981 Grady Whites good for that year? What do you guys think, its a cuddy. I came across a 1981 Grady White in my price range with a 2002 Suzuki 140 HP 4 stroke (see that post in the motors only area)

Thanks

Yes, Grady's were very well built in those years. ( A buddy had an 80 something walk around and it was sweet! Nice layout IMHO.)
That said, I'd have it checked over/surveyed by a professional based on it's age. Old boats and /or mechanical systems can get costly if you miss something up front.

Which model? They made 5 - 20' boats that year.

Not really sure, maybe you can tell by this picture?

Well, I took a test drive on it and it seemed solid, motor ran quiet and smooth. No fancy electronics, and he has a top side tank on deck because the built in tank had a leak BUT there is a removable floor hatch with screws to get at the tank so that would need to be fixed. Other than that it does seem solid just seems to need some basic tlc. (see picture)

I think that is a REALLY nice looking boat. Good luck if you get it.

Thanks, I may have it in my yard very soon. If I do get it I will have a bunch of post here since I am new to boating.

I had a 79 Gradywhite 204C walkaround cuddy cabin with a 200hp OMC outboard. Well designed quality boat, built by an experienced salt water boat manufacture. The only issue I ever had is that one of the fish locker drain hoses that was designed to drain out the side of the hull developed a split and I took on about 30 gallons of water one day in rocking 4 foot plus seas before I noticed we were getting water logged. I capped off the side over board fish locker drain and had the two boxes drain directly into the inner bilge. Never any other problem or complaint about the boat (only good memories about it).
Bottom line is Gradywhites are top of the line boats. Not an over upholstered sparkle boat which has flooded the boat market. I have no input about that Suzuki outboard though.

Will the tank come out easily or at all thru the floor access?
Maybe someone here would know. Maybe all tanks do - however -

I had a engine donor boat that I tried to get the tank out of so the dump would take it and it wasn't coming out easy so I gave up and luckily some chumps needed the trailer and took it all off my hands.
Just a thought

The newer outboard is a nice addition.

Grady White boats are highly regarded strongly built vessels. That being said, the number one problem, by far, with an older Grady White is transom rot. This is especially prevalent on the notched transom outboard models. Grady had a design throughout much of the eighties where an aluminum angle model was screw down from the top installed around the outside edge of transom notch. This angle covered the seam of outside hull/inside transom. After years of weather, factory installed sealants would wash out allowing water to get under this angle model, and down around screws securing angle molding. The design of the top of notch area directs this water directly to the seam, allowing water to get down into the interior wood of the transom. This actually goes undetected, because you will not be able to see if there is bad wood in the transom by looking at the outside fiberglass.
Best way to check one of these models for transom rot is to remove one of the screws securing the aluminum angle molding, and then push an ice pic or similar shaped item down into the screw hole. If it is soft and ice pick easily goes down into wood, then it most likely has some transom rot problems.
One other way to check would be if the boat has trim tabs, or a transducer mounted on the outside bottom rear area of transom. Again remove a screw or two and check for water or soft wood. If it is wet, then you will have an extensive repair on your hands.
I have owned three Grady Whites, and I am currently about halfway through a complete rebuild of transom on a 1984 Grady White 22' Seafarer. I knew when I purchased this particular boat, that this repair was needed.
Again great boats if you make sure you are getting a good one. JMO, Mike.

I was going to mention this myself. The guy I know who is a former marine surveyor mentioned to me one time that he'd seen a higer percentage of cases of transom sturation and rot in Grady's than he had in other boats. Check it out well.

Thanks for all the great feed back! This boat did have a transom rebuild, and it looks like a professional did it and she looks and feels rock solid now.

The tank is bad in her, though there is a hatch cover over the tank so I would assume that the tank would be able to come out.

I had a 19' 1977 Grady with an inboard tank that had the "floatation foam" put in around it, it could be a real job to get that tank out. I never had the tank out, i had taken off the floor acess panel to replace the Natolex on the floor when i saw the foam. Other than that it was the best boat that i have ever owned, top quality all around. I had a 302 smallblock I/O in it and never had any transom rot problems.
