What bolts come out of Johnson 1986 40hp powerhead to take it off?

I have been running this motor for a month without the overheat buzzer coming on but it happened again.

I put a new water pump kit in, pushed a rod up through the water tube, cleaned salt out of the back and one side (not bad though), replaced the head gasket and water gasket. So I guess the powerhead has to come off to check the water tube grommet. I have everything disconnected and the small cowling off the bottom of the cowling. There are eight bolts going up through the bottom which I think take holds the midsection on.

Which bolts come out to get the head off? The inside cowling bolts are out.

Does the lower unit have to come off or can the pin be slid out so dropping it isn't necessary?

Thanks. Bob

Remove all eight bolts Bob. Some find that removeing the lower unit helps, expecially with re-assembly. I do.

Bob,

Did you replace the thermostat? Those can be troublesome, especially in a motor that has seen salt.

I replaced the stat in my current 50. The old one was a one piece block of salt.

It is under the head cover.

Yes I put a new thermostat in too. Thanks for asking. I will drop the lower unit.

Are the eight bolts the only ones to come out because it doesn't want to break loose? I hit the motor with a block of wood and hammer.

I'm arfraid to attach a davit and lift it because it might damage a seal.
