I always use commercial drives.
DSL - crummy PPPoE setup, appx 1.5M.
Older OptiQuest V95 19" monitor. Very nice but now you can get one for a song.

Favorite computer: Old Toshiba T3200 (286) with a plasma screen. Just for the screen. :)

Apple iBook G4 1ghz (comparable to a 2 ghz pc in speed)
Direcway 2-way satellite isp, usually get consistent downloads of 7seconds per megabyte, but its a little slow now, due to tree growth. Guess I'll have to trim those bushes pretty soon.

I have a decent pc too, somewhere. I haven't turned it on since getting the mac 4 months ago.

Re: What brand of computer are you using

I've seen a lot of computers come and go and I can tell you who the survivors are - DELL. I have an old 166Mhz at home that is still working fine on dialup. At work all I buy is Dell.

HP = junk. Compaq = Junk. Gateway is a little better than HP + Compaq. There was a time when a home built system was better than the brand names but not anymore.

Cable modem seems a litter faster than DSL, but it depends on the website your surfing.

- Brian

Briannh... The home built system, only way I will still go for myself if I were to get a NEW machine.

a couple years ago, someone would ask "who kind of computer should I get" I'd say, give me your budget, we'll order the parts and build twice the computer.

It cost MORE to do it that way now for a basic home system.

Re: What brand of computer are you using

ndemge - you might appreciate this:
I just retired my old hard drives which were a bunch of Fujitsus. The primary one was a full height (ie, 2 bays), full size (ie, 5-1/4" slot) 2G Fujitsu 2654S. It had twelve physical platters, 21 actual, real live heads and spun at 5400rpm. It took about 30 seconds to wind up at startup and when seeking (which was pretty quick) the entire case shook. The reason for having a second box was to have a second power supply for running this beast!

My reason for liking white-box systems is that you don't have to compromise on the quality of components like you do with a package vendor. I can buy the best motherboard, the best drives, the best video card, the best memory, the best power supply, the best monitor, and have them serviced locally, supporting a local small business. Add that to having open industry standards, upgradeability, and last a very good price, and the proprietary all-in-one computer vendors start looking like a hard-sell.

That's what I've really started hating about all these new boxes at work now. They've all got low-profile this and space-saving that and none of it is conveniently (or cheaply) interchangeable.

And yes the big companies always shortchange something somewhere. I've noticed that most of the power supplies in them, for instance, are just barely enough to cover the components that they put in them. If you upgrade the video card or add HDs or something, then you've gotta upgrade the PS too, etc. PITA, iyam.

Re: What brand of computer are you using

The Dell computers I have bought have had plenty of power supply to fill the computer with add-on components. I've been buying the regular sized machines - not the low-profile ones. The one thing I have noticed that they skimp on is the AGP connector. If you buy a machine with on the motherboard video there is no AGP slot - So make sure you order one with a factory AGP card. I have never-ever seen a new video card or new HD require a new PS.

As for the quality of the components they are great. I don't think you can build a white-box machine that out performed a Dell at the same price. And they will build it to your specs.

They have all be very reliable as well. Having to tinker with a white box system to get it running correctly is a PITA to me. And then having to tinker with it again several months later because some component failed is another PITA to me. And finding out the component came from a supplier that is no longer in business is another PITA to me.

At a place I used to work at one guy ordered a MacIntosh while another ordered the parts for a white-box. They both got there stuff the same day. The Mac was running in a hour. The white box took several days.

No brand name, I assembled it myself. I think the floppy drive and one of the hard disks and the keyboard is the only thing left from my original system.

Cable modem 3+ megabits/sec actual D/L speed.
