5.0 Mercruiser. On the fence between Quicksilver, Sierra, DB Electrical. They all have good and bad reviews. Is It a crapshoot? Db Electrical $65 not painted for whatever reason, many people seem use them without issue. Sierra $210 on sale. Quicksilver $180ish. I think DB is new where the others are rebuilt. PITA to change so I only want to do it once. Is it all the same stuff with a different wrapper? Trailered in salt

Chatting with DB they say my OEM # does not cross with a PMM starter and they don't have one. They are telling me # 50-807904A1 is the one I need which is a PMGR. They said nobody has ever asked for a PMM and everyone wants the gear reduction. Could be BS as they don't offer one. Do you have a part # you use on a 98 5.0 OEM # is 50-863007A1 (most don't show the 50 in a search)

Ah yeah, I'm betting there isn't a backyard boat mechanic in the land who actually wants an old school heavy Delco direct drive starter after installing one of the lightweight PMGR starters. The are a pleasure for your forearms, hands and fingers lol.

I've also had good luck with db. I've had this one for 5 years. Got submerged in brine and is now on year 3? after I took it apart and cleaned it ...

I've run DB starters too in a few boats so they also get my vote.

After doing a few diesel starters, the small block direct drives aren't so heavy anymore.
