Like JB I had a, "mano vs mano", both of us armed and dangerous. I was the one being hunted.
We met each other after I circled around through thick bush and he was about a year younger than me. When I realised that I thought he'd not shoot. After all I was bigger and better armed than him so I settled down for a mexican standoff.
"Boom", the buggar shot me, glancing leg wound from a .303 isn't funny.
I played possum whilst he snuck up on me, and I greeted him from behind a tree with the muzzle of a .308 pressed against his temple. He jumped, shat himself and ran.... I had no intention of shooting him way out there in the bush.
Calm down, I was never worked up in the first place. That all hit me 45 min later when I realised I could've died out there. Bloody lonely after dark with nobody expecting me anywhere.
I survived because of good training, good tobacco, and a good brain.
Ross

No wowsers about it Heinz. It just happened and you either did something about it or you suffered the consequences.
I could relate a number of stories like that in my life but they all sound the same.
I'm a much calmer and more responsible adult for it nowadays and it's amazing how growth seems to follow a challenge.
Ross

Wow SW, I can see why it bothers you. Something like that is very traumatic to anyone except for the one that lost his life.

I had a situation when I was in the Navy. I was scheduled for a 12 hour flight to hunt for a submarine in the Canary Islands onboard a P-3. Myself and two other crewman were detained by security at the base because someone reported that the vehicle we were in was stolen. (we were in the squadrons ready vehicle DUH?) Well I missed my flight but they replaced us 3 crewman with the standbys. One of them was a good friend and roomate.

While the P-3 was flying its grid pattern at 1200' in rain and fog, it was making its final turn for its last leg of the grid. Sad problem was the plane was off course by 40 miles and flew right into a 4200' mountain. 9 souls were lost that night and I would have been one of them.

Not to sound selfish, but I had to keep saying that it was better thee than me. Losing the crew of the squadron was bad, but losing my friend and roomate was very emotional for me. Flying become a heavy burden for me, so I removed myself from the flight crew. I didn't want to compromise my fellow crewman for my own fearful thoughts while on a mission.

SoulWinner, I think you do fear something. That is being put into the same situation again. Say your prayers brother for being alive, after all it could have ended differently. Bless the lucky stars that your family didn't have to suffer your loss of life.

Maybe without your actions, that person could have shot and killed others. Put in your mind that you may of saved others as well as yourself. Hang in there friend....THINK POSITIVE!
