What can cause stator failure???

89 60 horse i have no spark THe repair shop says my stator is bad I did have a rough idle before it quit. It would not crank on the way out monday/ what causes stator failure when the motor ran fine before it quit???????

When you say it would not crank, you mean it wouldn't roll over or just would not start? If it wouln't roll over it means that your battery is dead. Assuming that your starter solenoid, keyswitch and neutral safety is good. In all likelyhood your rectifier is bad as this point.<br /><br />If it won't start and the stator has been verified bad, you might want to load test the stator. That is, when you are running check the current draw coming from the battery. If you are exceeding the rating of the stator, you have found the problem, but not the direct source. If you have a short anywhere in the wiring to ground you will be drawing excess current, overloading the windings in the stator. When this happens extra heat is generated on the coil windings until the insulating varnish/epoxy melts away and it shorts to ground.
