Im looking to get a bow rider. I had found the one i wanted (17' larson flyer) mint cond. inside and out for $6000 firm. Well a couple days later the hurricane hit in new orleans which is where the boat was. So Im looking again and was wondering what I can expect to find at this price?

Check out iboats classifieds, there are quite a few boats listed in that range.

I had a 17' bayliner for 5000 it was a newer model around 97

but, the guy did seem very desperate for money to be able to sell it at that price

Check out Boat Trader magazine available at most convenience stores.

I bought an 89 20' VIP with 302 V8 Last year. It had 445 hours, and I've put almost 100 hours on it.

You'll have to go older than you probably want, but there are gems out there. Check for floor/wood rot and ask for service records.

I gotta beleive that boat prices in Louisiana are going to plummet like a rock. I may be wrong, but it would seem that a couple of weeks of patience would really pay off. There are going to be people that need cash to start their personal recovery. I see nothing wrong with you looking for a deal like that as there will be boat dealers crawling all over that place striking hard bargains. You would probably be better to them than the dealers will . . .

Think very carefully about how you'll use it. After about 18 months of looking at boats (in person as well as on-line at www.yachtworld.com) I finally figured out that a trailer boat was NOT for me. In the end, I found a 1989 Larson 25' (about 29' overall) cruiser that is damn near perfect for me & my kids. Seller wanted about 14K but I paid about 10K in the end (here's the good part - I budgeted around 25K originally, so I was real happy).

I have a slip in a modest marina 6 miles from home and office, which allows me to sleep over anytime I choose. We average about 3-4 nights per week and therefore don't feel pressured to use it on weekends as much. Other costs are winterization & storage, etc, but I have a good boat guy and trust him. Total cost of ownership, incl gas & insurance but not payment, is about $3,500 per year. Not bad.

After 4 years, I'm soooooo happy that I took the time to really think about things before I bought. A smaller day-boat, or anything on a damn trailer, would not meet my needs as well.

Bottom line: What you are looking for now may not be what you end up with... keep an open mind.

... and GET IT SURVEYED !!!!

What do you think about this?
A 16.5' 1999 Larson Flyer with a 70hp johnson. All is in real good cond. only minor wear and tear for a 6yr old boat. Comes with a nice trailer for about $5000. How does this sound to you all?
Thanks guys!

16.5' Sounds small to me. I have a 19' Cuddy and I could not imagine getting anything smaller.

I'd guestimate for $6K you could find yourself a 1990 to 1996 18 foot runabout with a 3.0 or a 4.3.

Condition is everything....whatever you get make sure it's thorougly checked.

I have a 16 ft bowrider and love it. Plenty of space! It all depends on how the layout of the boat is...and what you are going to do with it!

Boat trader is a great way to go. You can really define your search to any area you want. http://www.boattrader.com
I agree with the others a 16 footer is pretty small. Mine is a 19 foot bowrider which is perfect for the 4 of us.
