What can I expect of a 5.7 GSI Penta

Hallo there,

Question. I have a 5.7L GSI Penta model WT from 99. It has been 5 years in salt water and 4 years in brackish water (slightly salt). It is raw water cooled and has been serviced and winterized every year. 5 months each year it is stored on land. Circulation pump and manifolds/ riser have been replaced last year. It has 431 hours on it and is running great and starts promptly.... Some guys tells me that it may be the last season as this engine has been living in salt water for that many years..... ;-(

Is this really the case ?

Nope. They have replaced the typical wear items, so that's good. You would want to visually inspect the engine and do a compression test. The most likely item to fail on the engine itself would be the intake manifold. If you could pull the thermostat housing off and see what the intake lookes like there, it mifght give you clues as to what the rest of it looks like.

Thanks your prompt reply - Sounds good.

In fact after replacing the termostat last season I had the term. housing off and no rust to see inside the engine at all - however not sure..... but I kind of remember that the "hole" into the engine under the term. housing was "coated" with brass or similar - not raw iron cast. Can this be true as then this exercise does not tell me much about the rest of the block.....

When you lay it up for the 5 months do you run saltaway thru it?

Sounds like you took good care of the motor, should give you many more years of service.

I flush my motor after every use but my boat stays on the trailer.

Volvo the best there is really.

Good luck!

Hi,

For the 7 months she sits in the water I do not flush the engine - I do not have the special attachment that allows you to flush the engine by a garden hose while in water (guess this is only possible on the newer penta models). However when I winterize it I flush it throughly with freshwater and then I run anti-freeze through it. This year however I have bought the fittings to make the garden flush possible - Not much dollars so thought even the engine is not new it cannot make things worse ;-)
