what can I use for outdrive oil

For my '89 Invader w/ the 3.0L Mercruiser Alpha I, what are the thoughts (I'm sure there are plenty) of Quicksilver oil versus other gear oil that I can get at walmart?<br /><br />thanks!

I use Merc....It's readily avaiable....& I never worry if I am using the wrong stuff.....JK

Walmart carries penzoil which is fine.A synthetic is a better choice.Quicksilver is always a good choice.Its hard to make a bad choice with any of these.Charlie

the marine oils like merc HP lube will drain out of the drive if any water gets in much better than a normal oil<br /><br />tommays

If I use Penzoil or similar, do I use gear oil? Which one? Isn't there 80W, 80W-90, etc?<br /><br />thanks.

80/85/90 Hypoid works nicely.

Are you asking if you should use gear lube or motor oil?<br /><br />You definately use gear lube. I personally use the High perf gear lube from merc, like JK said, I don't have to worry about if it is right or wrong.

nope, wasn't asking if I use motor oil, but there are different weight gear lube... the Penziol recommended is 80w90 and apparently the mobil 1 is 75w90...

Penzoil is Also 75W90 in the Full Syn.........

I use the quicksilver HP gearlube in all merc V6 and mercruiser gear cases. its good stuff.
