I have just replaced the stringers and epoxied them down with fiberglass made for the epoxy. i was going to use pressured treated wood to cover the floor and i was watch i video the other day say new boat use a foam floor. Can this be done in my boat i wonder?

Re: What Can I Use

Sorry ,not what i was get at .
I read all the articles.
I was hoping for a foam that could be filled into the stingers and cross pieces leveled out of top of them and would act as the floor too.
It would have to be strong to support the weight of chairs and passengers and be able to be pured as liquid / plus be uv -poof amd water proof.
That was more what i was get at.

i would say a transom restore section also, boat restoration is more of bringing old boats that require minimal attention back to life.

Re: What Can I Use

if you notice, that floor and transon replacement 80% of the time go together, as they both are usually effected.

the polymer boards are so heavy, and expensive that they really are not good chioce for this application. wood & glass is still the material of choice.

what about a cosmetics forum, for the boats snake mentioned. it all rolls together. you can get to cosmetics, until you have a safe hull.

Ya but maybe it is "still the material of choice" only because of perpetuated old school technique?
At some point in time the material of choice was wood planking or slats.
Which is still lighter and cheaper than 3/4" treated ply glassed and resined both sides.
Which is still cheaper than some other better, longer lasting alternatives like composite panels or aluminum, etc.

It kinda boils down to how much you want to invest over how many years.

WHAT CAN I USE , INSTEAD OF WOOD FOR THE FLOOR IN MY BOAT.
1/4" aluminium diamond plate, but not for saltwater. Corian, would be OK, abit expensive and slippery, but would last awhile ....

Use the old tried and proven methods and materials. The mfg's do. If there was a better and cheaper way to build floors their engineers and bean-counters would have found it. Build it safe and reliable. Ask yourself, how long did the original floor survive? How long do you think you'll keep it? Build accordingly. No matter what you use, the boat's value is not going up.

This looks good

Ayuh,..........

You could build a mold,+ cast a Carbonfiber panel, Custom Fit for your boat......

Most Plastics are either Too Heavy, or Too Slippery, or Not Strong enough.......

Metals all have their Own Issues........

Wood Works........

What about a layer of fiberglass, with 16lb foam spread out 1/2 thick and then Glassed over the top.

I would imagine though....that the amount of work put into such an endeavor would result in so much time that you could have replaced the floor twice.

the webcore is interesting, but on site cutting would require resealing the edges. this is where the human factor comes in to play with all the products. not sealed properly the water can get to the foam core.
after many many years in the construction business, water is going to find a way to get in, eventually, unless the proper care, and maintainance is not maintained.

Re: What Can I Use

I would go back to your first thought. The pressure treated wood. I saw one done that way at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri this summer. He'd used 5/4 decking that comes rounded on the edges. I talked to the guy at length about it because it looked great. I forget the brand of boat but it was an open bow, probably 19-20'. He said he picked out the good sides of each piece and treated the heck out of the reverse side with Thompsons water seal. Then he cut each piece to fit, cutting the ends with a jig saw with the blade set at the proper angle to match the slant of the hull. He butted the boards together and screwed it all down. Then it was left to sit in the sun for a few days to lose a little of the green color and for the boards to "shrink" a little. This left him with about a 1/16" crack between each slat. Then he sanded it smooth and splinter free and put on several coats of poly with a slight amber tint. It looked fantastic.
I asked him what about foam underneath getting wet and causing it all to rot. This is where I started to scratch my head. He said when he rebuilt the stringer grid he made the openings just the right size to fit empty 2 litre soda bottles. He glued the caps on and placed 128 of them in there. I asked him if this would work as well as foam. He said he didn't know but it had to be better than nothing, which is what some boats have there. Plus...they will probably last forever out of the sun. I couldn't argue with him.
Anyway, I'll say it again. The floor looked fantastic, and he said he had less than $300 total in the project. My camera was back at my truck so the only pic I have is in my head, but if I ever do a floor, this is what I'm gonna do.
As for aquiring the soda bottles...he said he told his co-workers that he was looking for empty bottles on a Tuesday and by Friday he had 200.

I wonder if anyone has used ping pong balls instead of soda bottles. I know the "mythbusters" raised a ship off the bottom of the ocean with them, so I would imagine it could be an alternative, but pricey, depending upon how much they are in bulk.

Ayuh,.......... That's my kinda Guy.............

Ping Pong Balls just won't have the Longevity of Soda Pop Bottles........

Soda Pop Bottles will last ForEver when not in the Sun........

Glued Caps are optional,+ Unnecessary in My book.......

It was hard not to chuckle when he told me about the pop bottles. I wondered how he came about that revelation. Maybe he sat straight up in bed one night and said "honey...I've got it.....pop bottles" and maybe she said "that's nice, dear...now STFU and go back to sleep"
Plus...it made me wonder about something else. If he were able to collect 200 in 3 days, think of what's happening at the landfill.

Anyway....the floor DID look nice.
