when i redid the carpet on another boat i used to have... i just went to home depot and and got the outdoor carpet, i think it was about 3$ a yard or so.... it looks great, comes with the rubber backing on it, and you can use almost any type of all purpose carpet glue on it...

it was cheap, and it was made to withstand the elements...

and it looked good too...

cnaman, I agre with Zuke. If you can find an outdoor carpet you like at the Home Despot, it will be so much cheaper than an marine place. I actually special ordered a teal carpet ath the H-D. It was still very cheap.

i agree with klos, carpet has no place any where except on the bunks. and the new poly covers, should take that place.

You can go to Lowes or Home Depot either one and ask them for a marine grade carpet they have it pretty cheap. I redone my boat, I went to Lowes, I think Home Depot also carries it.

....or you could try this type of Nautolex. Here's a pic of my recently redone floor. The original Nautolex (see inside side pockets) lasted over 30 years. Carpet in a runaboat makes no sense. It does nothing but hang onto water and dirt, then look tacky very quickly.

Re: what carpet should i use

My aluminum boat had outdoor carpet and the floor rotted from being wet most of the time. I have just replaced the plywood. After it was cut to size I put two coats of outdoor primer then a coat of marine carpet glue then another layer of marine carpet glue with a 1/8th thick troule...then the Nautolex $15.15 per yard from this site...

You probably see a few of them down your way, Zetman. It is a Gulfstream, now defunct, out of Salt lake City. They were made from sometime in the '60's to mid? 80's. They had 18 and 20 footers.

There is a Gulfstream link in the MFG's forum below. If you should happen to run into a junker, I'm looking for a set of OEM seats, regardless of shape. (cheap)

Boomyal, what does that flooring feel like on bare feet? I'm no big fan of carpet either, but there's a reason most boats have it, especially non-fishing type boats. If it feels "plasticy" I think it screams of "cheap". More functional, maybe but comfortable, I'm interested to find out.

It does look clean and neat.

tmh, the floor does not feel like plush carpet under your bare feet but it does not feel plasticy either. It is a very good, firm non-skid finish that does not 'cut' like some of the non-skid additives that you put in paint coatings. Lighter colors stay cooler and darker colors can be hot in 100 deg heat.

When glued down well, it is very durable and easy to flush clean.

Here is a side picture of the molded seat bases that your boat probably came with. IMHO they are the absolute best in the industry. Unfortunately, I think many people tossed them when the upholstery wore out and installed cheap generic seats and bases instead of just having the originals re-upholstered. Except for the risor blocks that I built, these are the original 33 y/o seat bases.

Be sure to check out my Shareaproject tutorial for many aides in redoing your floor.

Also be sure to add some of your pics to the Gulfstream Archieve forum, here. Start a new topic for your addition. This may end up being the only place on the net that has any accumulation of Gulfstream info.

Boomyal how easy is that stuff to mold around corner's, or can it be, and if it could be, do ya need a heat gun?

TG, I'd have to see what you were referring to. It would have it's limitations as it is a vinyl impregnated onto a fairly tight ripstop woven fabric.

Check to see if the carpet is oil and gas resistant. marine carpet is usually resistant , I think the backing material is the problem. Some of the home store outdoor carpet is not fuel spill proof, it may melt or come apart when contacted with gas or oil. I just bought some from a carpet store $9 a yard a 8x16 piece was $100.
Very plush cut pile marine grade
