Along the lines of my other post concerning no tell tail, what would cause a impeller to go bad?
On my motor there is a flushing device that allows you to flush the cooling system, I take it that it is not intended for running your engine out of the water, is this a correct assumption?

Its made of rubber and with time and or lack of use, it oxidizes and loses its flexability.

Just my 2 cents

Wear from time or sand and gravel or running out of the water are things which make an impellor go bad. Do not run the motor while using the flusher attachment that comes with the engine.

Hello
I agree with what all 3 posted above me, and one other thing is that the blades of the impeller also get trained and lose efficiency. You will se that, if you ever change one yourself, and see what the old one looks like and how ya need 3 hands to get the new one ( with straight blades ) under the cap. Don't go the cheap route either, the impeller is about 27.oo, you can get the whole kit for 50.00..............while ya have it apart....change everything............good cooling is very important
thanx
Bruce

All the advice I've had says replace the impeller once every 5 years, with light duty/weekend use (like on fresh water lakes, weekends, etc). I'm sure that salt water or heavy sediment use would need more frequent changes.

The Selec book as an impressive set of photos on what an impeller looks like after just a few minutes (seconds, really) of use w/o water. If you clog your intakes or otherwise restrict the water flow, the impeller will be shot quite quickly. Soon after, your powerhead will be shot too!

Better safe than sorry!
B
