Just curious as to when a river becomes a lake or a pond a lake and then there is this whole man make tank thing. Give up your thoughts.

a pond is shallow enough to support rooted plants over its entire area.

Literally all of the lakes in Texas are man-made exept Caddo (which we share with Louisiana).

Is a tank called a tank everywhere? Not sure. And how do they make tanks...I've seen 'em out in the middle of a pasture with no visible water source.

They are not called tanks every where. Out west they are called stock water ponds or dams. They are built to collect maxium runoff from as large an area as possible. My question is: Where do the frogs and cattails come from no matter how far in the prarie they are? Always within a year or two there are frogs aand water plants all over them.

Spring water seapage and snow melt catches and stands for months causing the plants growth.

It is now illegal to make stock dams on your own land in most areas thanks to the drought we are in. Unless you mean a stock tank as in a large metal tank that the windmill or pump runs water into. I had a few solar wells that would trickle water into the tank slowly.

Not illegal down here yet. Now you can not damn a creek but tanks are ok.

Jtexas, good explanation, now I can give an intelligent answer when asked. Thanks.

We call the dams stock ponds. The ones that hold water year round have been stocked with fishes. These are the best fishing around.

The round steel tanks have a dual purpose. When the river has water in it we get a bunch of people in them and float down the river.

Imagine a round steel tub, about 10 or 12 foot diameter and 3 feet deep with 4 or 5 people in it tryin to navigate the river. Every year we used to have tank floats. Races down the river in these small round tubs. If it ever rains we will do that again.

We is so poor in New Mexico we use the inner tubes from the big truck in the river errr streams here. :D

To me a pond is a small body of water you cannot get a boat on plane for more than a minute.

A lake usually has a dam on one end. :D

I spent two years in Artesia. I know what you mean by streams.
