Interesting stuff you guys do!

I was a boatbuilder before becoming a Professional Garden Hose Roller Upper. I also tend to a couple thousand horses that eat fuel and crap oil. I even have a license to do this!

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

Like my profile says - Computer guy, father, husband, fisherman, and writer. Started in the newspaper business way back when, then into electronics, then computers, then retail services, owned my own business, built houses, a couple of restored street rods, play with boats, love to fish and camp. Sometimes a redneck, sometimes a country boy, sometimes a city slicker, sometimes a pirate. Floridian by birth, Southern by the grace of God as they say. Still working (probably forever) in the IT business (healthcare).

Hey Rocky, you don't, but chance, work for Molex? My uncle was a plant manager at both the Illinois and the Nogales facilites before retiring many years ago.

Just curious.

Soldiered for ten years (Can sigs corp), got a job with the telephone company for a few, then started contracting. We place and splice aerial and U/G cable (copper, fiber, Coax).
We run two to ten people depending on the work load.

I now manage the company my father (recently passed away) founded in late 50's. We are independent adjusters specializing in the investigation and resolution of all types of aviation related accidents / claims. We have offices in NY, IL and CA. We work primarily for Lloyds of London and other foreign and domestic aviation insurers. My dad hired me in 1978.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

Growed up on a farm, been workin on things since I was big enough to hold a wrench, went into automotive as mechanic, moved to heavy trucks, still in the business taking care of warranty and whatever IT needs doing at a commercial/heavy duty truck dealer. Still working at 68 not sure I will ever retire, gonna slow down some so I can enjoy the boat and water more. Growing up the way I did I also build whatever I need around the house, plumbing, electrical, current project is rebuilding my docks.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

Cool thread.

I have been in the diesel truck engine biz since I got out of high school. 34 years now  First 24 of that with a Caterpillar dealer, literally started sweeping floors and had stints in parts sales, parts and service management, and then sales again. Included experience with marine, genset and industrial engines as well. Never messed with off-highway stuff.

The last 16 years, some there and some with new company I joined in 2001 (long story, same job, different paycheck) I have been focused on Natural Gas (CNG and LNG), in heavy-duty, on-highway diesels. I kind of specialize in marrying up the fuel supply, vehicle specs and partners to make a fleet deal that offers an attractive payback. This includes shepherding our OEM relationships that allow us to offer factory supported conversions. You might think of us like a Roush Mustang, or Callaway Corvette type supplier to Truckers. We take a normal truck and make it something different, we think better, I wish they always did :)

Even though the Illinois Molex plant is almost in my back yard, never worked for them. I work on stuff way smaller than theirs.

Maintenance man, all things injection molding (plastic), from processing to mold repair to robots to major machine repair. Basically, whatever it takes to keep the job running, up to and including facility maintenance. 12 hour night-shift the last 2 years, but less BS from idiot managers.....

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

I find people jobs in Information technologies all over the US, previously sold software for a large IT company. Lots of fun putting folks back to work, sure wish I could do more in Michigan, but being national sure helps.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

I started working ad a dee jay for high school dances when I was 13.
I moved up to night clubs when I was 17 (lol....under the legal age, but the owners wanted me to DJ thier clubs)

After several years I became an expert on promotion and marketing of night clubs, so I was asked to build/design night clubs for many investors, including several major hotel chains.

In the 90's I was hired (actually forced at knife point lol) to take over the afternoon drive of a radio station in Yellowknife NWT
I moved to Victoria BC where I was the afternoon drive announcer on CKDA (am) and CFMS (fm) radio simultaneously. I was also the music director.
Computers were just arriving on the scene in the radio industry, so i was mandated to automate both radio stations....37 people got laid off after i was done.......so I quit in protest to the lay offs.

I moved to Kelowna BC, where I bought a clothes dryer from an auction of 5 dollars. fixed it (it was broken of course) and sold it for 100 dollars.....
That was the humble start to my furniture and appliance store,,,,,ended up doing 1.5 mill a year with 3 large locations.
That was when I started doing the hull extension on my boat....
After the stock market crash of 08 my stores went down and closed in early 09.

Thats when I started the boat building and restoration/repair business that I own right now.....

To be continued.......lol

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

I'm in the Textile Management recruiting business 32 years now and still enjoying it, 68 years old but no major parts have fallen off yet, so can't seem to find a good reason to retire. Fireman, we're heading down your way in April, put in at Welaka, cruise the river to Sanford and back, camp on the boat, a couple of nights at Hontoons Resort...gotta love that St Johns River!;)

PM me when you get down here! I'd love to hang on the hook for an afternoon with you guys. We can raft up with a few other no good friends of mine and grill/swim/etc. Heck, we'll even lead the way...not down to Welaka, tho...we'll get stuck forever!!

Kev...I wish I knew how many times I've been in the Luxor! They even have some of my money! But on better vacations, I left with a bunch of theirs!!

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for. This is a giant, well diverse group of people that have all come together over one common interest. You could never plan something like this. Keep 'em coming....

Twenty years as a security force member in the USAF. Then twenty years teaching at an alternative high school. Now weighing whether to continue teaching or to try something else.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

I am always amazed by peoples careers. They are far more interesting than mine..

I am an enterprise architect for a major financial services company. Been there for ~23 years.. I know where the bodies are buried.

Re: What Did/Do You Do?

jeepers this is a really diverse group of people, how awesome :D
I finished school early and did my apprenticeship as a mechanic at ford, holden and honda, hated servicing and making sure cars were safe to sell (mega boring) so I opened my own custom shop, joined the army reserve (infantry), had enough after awhile, sold the shop and went into the army full time. Had a blast, did some stuff, made lots of friends, learnt ALLOT about myself............ got hurt and had a couple of surgery's, but still broken and now Im retired. I'm also a dad to my little 9 month old boy
