I don't have any experience with a bass boat but, it seems to me, they're similar to a hydroplane race boat. They don't like waves, especially at that speed. I'm glad the guys ok.

What others have said. He didn't have any real control from the get go. Sawing madly away at the wheel, running blindly into chop and wind, trimmed too far for the hull, and ultimately crossing a wake he had no business being anywhere near.

A hack with no feel for a hull's relationship with the elements around it and acting upon it and dumb beyond words. He's lucky to be alive.

Been there, done that, bought the Tee shirt with this boat--albeit at a lower speed--44. First time I flipped it, it fooled me because I thought it was stable right up until the time it got airborne. Second time I tried on a smaller wake and it still got loose. Now, I don't do wakes with it.

Crossing wakes at speed always carries risk in a high performance boat. The operator was certainly having fun before the boat got loose on him.

My little 10 footer is extremely intolerant of operator error and will bite you in the A** at the drop of a hat. I learned that after the first wake. and 400 bucks worth of glasses. That's photo shows about the tallest wake I will cover in this boat.

But notice: There appears to be almost no damage to the hull. Pretty tough stuff, that fiberglass. Try doing that with an auto and see what you have left.

My problem with this video is teh captions. There wrong. Instead of his pfd and kill switch saved his life it should have been lack of common sense nearly cost him his life.

practicing for a race with a Bass Boat? There are Bass Boat races?

In Al we have lots and lots of bass boats. One day these tournament organizers are going to address over powered boats. While most of the contestants exercise reason and caution. There are always a few with a 16ft boat and a 300hp motor tearing down the river with no regard for others.
Someones going to get killed and someone is going to sue. It will happen.

We recently had a guy go to prison for BWI. He was hot dogging and drove over another boat killing one of the parents.

The most impoprtant comment:

"What I want to know is why was he in the water for 10 minutes?! What was that filiming boat doing? Filming I guess. "

The filming part is key.

There are Bass Boat races?
Yeah, they are called tournaments . . . and the fastest boat sometimes means the most fish.

I am always concerned about those who think they are qualified to determine max speed allowed by anything operated by anyone. Obviously this guy exceeded his capabilities, but he had the lanyard on!!! And his life jacket!!! What if he hit Nessie? Would y'all feel differ'nt? So he messed up. We don't?

You play hard you crash hard. There is a thin line between in control and out of control. If you noticed in the start of the video that he was starting to chine walk in the small waves at top speed. That in it self should have slowed him down.

Re: What did this guy do wrong? Boat crash..

Like a few said before, these boats are common sight on any local river. They believe faster boats mean more fish, which to me really kills the fun of fishing and relaxing. Last summer, myself and a few buddies were wakeboarding behind my boat, ballasts were full and the wake was massive, some idiot came peeling down with his bass boat, cut through our wake only about 20 feet behind the buddy I was pulling, then almost lost control and proceeded to give us the finger while passing us, then slowing down in front of us, forcing us to change course, so he basically wanted to male our wake set a waste. Needless to say, working for the police, I got the Hull Number, made a call and the guy was met at the marina by a few of my police buddies, they found 16 empty beer cans in the boat and the guy was arrested... Moral of the story is... lakes, rivers and oceans are filled with Idiots!

Re: What did this guy do wrong? Boat crash..

I have to agree with the masses, Jumping a wake in a bassboat? I wouldn't do it at those speeds in my deep V. My last boat (85 17' 4Winns 260 Alpha 1, thru hulls, trim tabs etc) was VERY fast, I've topped it out before using engine and tab trim till just the chine was on the water on a glass smooth lake, at about 65, a sudden headwind caused the boat to start "Chine Walking" she was doing a little dance and I had little control except to throttle back, it worked, in the video it looks like he was chine walking a bit too. After that I make SURE I have enough hull in the water to keep her straight.

Re: What did this guy do wrong? Boat crash..

I think it's more an issue of approach and departure angles. He came into that wake nearly broadside and the boat was unstable. If he'd gotten out of the throttle and stayed in the wash, maybe it would have been ok. If he had crossed the wake bow on ( closer to 90 degrees ) there would have been lots of air but again it might have been ok. Where it really went bad...( imho ) was after the second wake where the boat is cresting the wave bow up and the port bow lifts more. This is putting the starboard quarter deeper in the water and maybe what starts the spin. Enough of my desktop piloting. BOTTOM LINE, ANYBODY can get in over their heads and this is a really good example of how fast everything can go wrong. Glad the guy was ok.

That looks like what we call "chine walking". Probably caused by all of the above. If you can feel it when it starts and EASE off the throttle you can laugh about it later.

Saw this video and wondered what experienced boaters opinions are... Obviously not a good idea to jump wakes at that speed, but he looked out of control even on the straight away runs before the crash. Was he overpowered? or just and idiot?

Just an idiot would be the answer! The water conditions were wrong to be at those speeds in the firstplace, in that boat anyways.
