I'm looking some guidance. I have a 15’ 1953 Whirlwind with a 15” transom. Currently I have a 1963 Evinrude Fastwin on the boat. I can’t get this boat out of the water with this motor and need something bigger in the way of HP. I have these three motors available to me and I don’t know what is the best motor. They all seam to be in equal condition and each will cost me $400.00. My question is what do I buy? I’m looking for speed and easy maintenance.

1959 Gale Sea King Outboard Motor 35 Hp.
1959 Evenrude 35 HP Lark
1981-40hp Evinrude

Regards,
Michael

Re: What do I buy?

If they are all in equal condition, I would buy the 1981 40hp. It is more powerful plus parts would be easier to find. It would probrably be better on gas as well. Be sure to do a compression test on them before you buy one. That will give you a good indication of their true internal condition. Shoot, just ask to try them out on your boat. See which one you like the best. I'm not sure but the older ones may require a richer oil to fuel ratio also. The older ones may also suffer from the "tiny prop and gearcase syndrome," thus be slower. Good luck!

Jmaes

No doubt about it. All things being equal, the 1981 for parts availability if nothing else. These motors were reliable and fairly easy to work on. Couldn't agree more that you should try before you buy.

I agree with Jee and Jack, but for different reasons.

Is the 40 a looper twin? I don't remember when OMC first offered that as a 40.

The OMC loopers, twin and triple, are among the best outboards ever made. Some think the best.

The other two are good engines (have to be to be around 43 years later), but they are '30s technology gas hogs.

Even if the 40 is a cross scavenged model, it is the best choice because of the reasons Jee and Jack gave you.

Good luck. :)
