What do I have in my boat? OCM or Volvo?

2000 Four Winns with a 1998 style 5.7. OCM or Volvo Penta GSI?

I recently bought this boat. Service records show the block was replaced when previous owner didn't freeze proof and caused a block failure. The ECM has a model and serial number that lead to Cobra OCM but the TBI cover clearly says Volvo GSI 5,7.

What am I working with here or does it even matter?

There is a serial number on the block, but it just leads to a generic general motors block manufactured in Flint MI. I think it is a Ramjet Longblock.

As expected with a used boat, I am having brain scratching issues and I want to make sure I post accurately....

I am going to post my questions in the volvo forum first.

But in the meantime, Volvo or Cobra OCM or are they the same?

Any other model numbers that you can find? They are often on the valve cover or the starboard riser but they may be gone after the engine was replaced.

OMC and Volvo did a joint venture for a few years, then OMC went out of business in December of 2000. While Volvo assumed some liability, pretty much the brand died). some components for the JV years cross over to either Volvo or OMC, however they are not the same.

the Cobra drive is pure OMC

your motor could be OMC, Volvo, Mercruiser or from a local salvage yard as the long blocks all come from GM

motor serial number may not help here (not the block casting number)

the motor serial number plate will be riveted to the side of the starter boss on the block. the block casting number will be on the back of the right side of the block above the flywheel housing.

you may even have an OMC ecm controlling a Volvo motor.

now. specifically what is the issue/problem you are having?

post pics of your drive if you cant identify it

No Title

The first pic is the info on the ECM that pretty clearly shows OMC Cobra (built by Volvo).

The second pic shows an overview of the motor with "Volvo 5.7 GSI" on the throttle body cover.

The third pic is the stamp on the block. I've searched the model # and serial # and just get general long block info.

I really just want to know what to look for when I need parts, do I lookup Volvo parts or OMC parts?

Do I have Frankenstein?

You have the BY model. You can use that model designation when looking for Volvo parts. You can look up parts either way OMC or Volvo. It is indeed a 1998 model engine.

That engine/drive was made in the joint venture years. It is not a frankenmotor.

Definitely post your questions in the Volvo section.

Buy a set of OEM manuals like this set:
