Re: What do I need to do to get my o/b running?

My thoughts on de-carbing are that I want to do it, but I want to get in running well first.

I feel this way because when I spray something (de-carb) into the motor, that causes it to bog down. Now, if the motor isn't running well, and I spray some Deep Creep in, it's gonna die too quickly for the decarb to get in all the places that it needs to.

This may be terrible logic, but that is my thinking.

So, soon I will be decarbing. Especially since things are running pretty well now. I also wanted to get a little use out of my new plugs before killing them with decarb. I didn't keep the old ones like I was supposed to. If I had those, I probably would've done this already. :(

One thing I have found to watch out for is that the decarbs differ in their directions according to who makes it. Keep this in mind. I plan on following the instructions *TO THE LETTER* when I do it. I have heard enough about the negative aspects of decarbing that it worries me a little. Not too much though, as I still plan on doing it. ;)

Have you checked the compression yet? I am curious to see what it does to my compression numbers. I felt like mine were too high at 155 and 160 lbs. Someone here suggested a decarb to make sure that carbon wasn't the cause. If you haven't, I would strongly suggest that. It'll be good for diagnosis if there is any problems and will also let you know more about the general health of your motor. I bought a compression tester for $24 at the local auto parts place.

sorry this was soooooo long. kind of ramblin'.

Good luck. :)

Jason

That's not a bad idea I guess with getting it running first. Guess I should worry about decarbing after I get it running

Haven't checked the compression yet or even touched the motor yet. Still waiting on the manual to get here which is supposed to be Wednesday. But I'll probably tear right into it this weekend after going thru the manual a couple times to get an idea on what I'm gonna be doing and how to do it. I'll let you know what my compression numbers are as soon as I know.

Re: What do I need to do to get my o/b running?

Alrighty, got the manual today and I must admit, it doesn't look as intimidating to work on the motor as I originally thought. Also, thanks to everyone who's offered their suggestions and advice!

After going thru the manual, I came up with a little list of parts I think I'll need. What I would like is for someone to confirm I have everything listed that I'll need. This is what I've come up with:
Spark Plugs (manual gives which ones)
Carb Kit (or I may go with buying a completely new carb; Pro's? Con's?)
Water Pump (I'm going to replace the whole assy instead of just the impeller; Good? Bad?)
Fuel Lines
Geargrease.

The motor is a 1973 Merc 850. Is this a distributorless ignition motor? And what about plug wires? I couldn't find anywhere in the manual about replacing them. Is it safe to assume the plug wires run straight to the ingition coils?

One last question, is there somewhere on this website where I can track down the correct part numbers I need for the parts I'm replacing so I have something to give the boat shop?

Sorry for all the "O/B motor idiot" questions  This is my first boat/motor so I have no clue what I need to do.

I wouldn't deal with plug wires until you get it running. When you do take the cover off at night and start it up (with muff of course) and look for sparking around the wires.

Another thing you may want to replace is the fuel pump. I would wait on that too until Itried to start it.

That is a good motor. I had a 1970 80hp that I got in 75 and ran the crap out of for 7 years in salt water with out a problem.

JUMPER; Your on the right track. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Tell me quick of anyone you know who was born knowing about Outboards or anything else for that matter.

I have a little advice on a couple of your questions. Fuel Tank, go with a new plastic one. I had four metal ones, then I saw an ad from Walmart. $13.95. My metal ones have gone the yard sale route.

Before you get too involved with a compression test, Get yourself some P.B.Blaster. It beats WD40 all to H....!

Take your plugs out and pour about an ounce in each cylinder. Leave the plugs out and turn the motor over a few times to coat the rings. 10 years is a long time. P.B. Blaster can be had at almost any parts house. $3.99.

Jumper you have quite a lot of good help and with the aid of the Manual and the guys on this board you can do it. Then when your fired up for the first time, everything going well, and a great day of fishing or skiing ahead. Try to figure out why you can't stop grinning. Its a good feelin',knowin' you did it ,all by yourself, LOL.

Seriously, take your time, ask questions and make it happen. Happy Boating, Hal

SoLittle,
I was wondering about the fuel pump myself, but looking thru the manual, I sort of got the impression it had a carb/pump combo in it. Is that a safe assumption? Also, what about fuel filter? Do these have an internal filter or inline filter?

Anybody have any idea?

Hey, Jumper.

Pretty good list.

I wouldn't buy all new carbs, just rebuild the old ones. Pretty big cost difference.

I replaced the whole unit, housing and all, when I replaced my impellar, so I agree. ;)

I agree with soLittle - save the plug wires until you get it running.

Replacing the fuel pump is up to you. I didn't, because there was a 40 price difference between the new pump and the rebuild kit.

You're on the right track. It's not as bad as it looks at first.

Good luck!

Jason
