What do I need to run engine while out of the boat?

I'm just about to pull my AQ131A out of my '87 Capri and put it on an engine stand. At this point, I'm not sure how much work is going to be required to fix it up, but I do know that I want to time and run the engine until I'm satisfied with it before it goes back in the boat. And as far as I know, you can't run an engine from an engine stand.

My question is this: what do I need to fixup/build or whatever to hold the engine so that I can start it up and run it? I should mention that this engine does not use front engine mounts. It bolts directly to the flywheel housing and that's it.

I've seen engines sitting on pallets and being run, but that looks a bit sketchy to me.

Are there any options that I'm not thinking of?

That's all I have ever done. Just set the flywheel cover housing on the pallet, and blocks under the front mounts. Have run gas and diesel like that. If it makes you nervous, just put an engine hoist on it with the chain snug so it can't fall.
Hook up water, power, and gas and fire it up.

Thanks. The chain and hoist is the thing that never occurred to me, but it would. as you say stabilize the engine and keep it upright. That's what I'm going to do.

Ayuh,.... From a briggs stratton, to a monster diesel, motors don't dance 'round like ya think they might,...

An I/O motor, any of 'em, will just sit there, while runnin', without much of any worries....

I just screw the blockin' together, 'n a screw through the motor mount hole, to hold 'em still...

Motor's don't need boltin' down, til ya attach a Load to 'em....

Zero torque movements on blockin'...

I've run an AQ130 on a medium duty engine stand.
