What do you guys think of a 2006 Sea Ray Sundeck 220?

My Dad is looking to trade in his Tahoe 215 on this boat. It has a Mercruiser 5.0 MPI with a Bravo 3 outdrive. Absolutely mint condition with the exception of 2 extremely small knicks in the gel that they are fixing. It has 83 hours. Its dark blue hull. He signed papers and left a deposit pending sea trial. I think he got a great deal on it, and it is a beautiful boat, but thought I would ask the experts.

We are hoping it has a similar ride to my Monterey 214 FS. They love how solid and sure my boat feels compared to their current Tahoe and my prior Tahoe Q7, and even my 91 Chap.

I personally like my Monterey better, but for a deck boat, the Sea Ray is pretty nice. Much nicer than the 205 sport I looked at when I bought mine. The 205 sport looked like an overpriced Bayliner, but this sundeck is much nicer. I dont really care for the shiney gold color on the seats, but otherwise the fit and finish is very nice. We were also looking at a Chap 230SSi, but it was a little beat up. Cheaper, with similar hours, but it looks like it was kept in salt water or used extensively in salt. It also only had a regular Volvo penta 5.0 GXi. That Bravo 3 with the duoprops looks menacing.

We have a 2006 220 select, very similar boat. The Bravo 3 is awesome in the active lakescape
we have at Lake Mead. Loaded the boat last week in 50 mph crosswind as easy as if it had been calm. The rig tows slightly heavy (we use a chevy diesel for tow vehicle). Only other
negative observation I might have is the 5.0 is slightly underpowered at higher altitudes.(5000 ft. at Blue Mesa Res in Colorado) Very nice set up for children with high freeboard.

My Dad only had a 190hp Mercruiser 4.3 V6 in his Tahoe, so he is used to being underpowered. LOL. We are in FL too, so altitude wont be an issue. It is the MPI too so its 260hp. I have the same engine in my Monterey and it s plenty suffecient for what we do. He has a Navigator Mark LT, and it is underpowered for his Tahoe, so I am betting he will be struggling with this one.

Anything else?? Anything I should look for in the sea trial??

The Sea Ray is top of the line--when you get above their entry level boats. With such low hours, hopefully the boat is under warranty. I'd just get it up to speed, trim it out and see that it pulls the redline on rpm's.

Properly maintained, they're great values and will last a lifetime if kept out of the water covered up.

He has a Navigator Mark LT, and it is underpowered for his Tahoe, so I am betting he will be struggling with this one.

That's pretty funny! Just looked up a Tahoe 215 and it looks to weigh ~3,000 lbs, or possibly 4,000 on the trailer. His Lincoln should be rated for 8-9,000 lbs and it's UNDERPOWERED!

We pull a 28ft center console with twins with a Navigator. Without any issues. There are hundreds of Sea Rays for sale down here. They are well made but not a boat for rough water. Make sure he runs through some 3 footers. The big Sea Ray Dealer in Clearwater has a very protected and very shallow bay behind the dealership.A bass boat would feel good on it.

That's pretty funny! Just looked up a Tahoe 215 and it looks to weigh ~3,000 lbs, or possibly 4,000 on the trailer. His Lincoln should be rated for 8-9,000 lbs and it's UNDERPOWERED!

I know what its rated for, but compared to my little Trailblazer EXT it is a pig. Especially getting on the highway. I can easily reach the 70mph speed limit before having to merge into traffic, whereas the Navigator struggles to get to 65mph floored. Which is scary when the speed limit is 70 and most people are going faster. We had a Navigator as well and it seemed to have more power than his. Not sure if the Mark LT is heavier than the regular Navigator, but it sure struggles.

Rumor herein that it is the hottest number on the market in it's class. Sea Ray is a superb boat builder and has been for 40-50 years that I know of.

I am usually averse to "deck boats" as they typically have low deadrise. The exception are the SeaRay Sundecks and indeed this model has 21 degrees at the transom. I couldn't find the specs on your 214, but the 204 is a 19 degree hull and the 224 has 20, so I assume the SeaRay is actually a deeper"V" than yours. This should make for a very solid ride in all conditions except at rest where she will be kinda tippy. Part of the deal. For my lakes, she would work well and she should feel more "solid" than your Monterey.

As far as the power package is concerned the 260 MPI 5.0 is smaller than I would like for top speed, but coupled with the Bravo 3 she will be very good. Remember, the the MPI 5.0s are stronger than any stock carbed 5.7 that Merc ever offered. Anybody that brings up torque doesn't understand the torque begets horsepower and the Bravo 3 will make up for anything else. As long as you're not looking for 50 MPH I think she'll be great!!!

According to my owners manual I have 20 degrees dead rise. It is extremely stable on rough water, and has a pretty wide beam, so its not tippy at all.

My father is used to a 190hp in a 22ft deckboat, wtih a top end of about 40mph, so I think the 5.0 will be fine for him.

Comparing apples to apples, the 205 sport Sea Ray didnt hold a candle to my 214 in ride or fit and finish, but this Sundeck is pretty nice. The interior colors are some weird metalic gold, but otherwise it is pretty nice.

No slam, just a characteristic of high deadrise V's. Almost all of these boats have 8'6" beams. Magically that's max trailering width

Edit: BTW, the "typical" deck boat of 16 degrees will knock your teeth out on chop . . .

No offense taken. I am hoping everyone is right about the Sundeck being higher quality than the smaller Sea Rays I looked at when I bought my boat. I really wanted a Sea Ray, but after taking out 2 differant 205 Sports, I decided against them. They really felt just like my Tahoe Q7 on the rough water, and were just about a step above it in fit and finish, and I couldnt get past the ugly '80s style colors.

My Dad is really looking for something that cuts through rough water nicely, and can hold about 8 people comfortably. His current boat seats 11, and isnt too bad for 8 people on calm water, it just doesnt have a toilet, nor is it comfortable on rough water. The front sits so low that everyone in the bow gets wet. So I think the Sundeck is going to be perfect for him. I think we are sea trialing it on Friday.

Thanks for the info so far. Should I be looking for anything peculiar to this model when we trial it?

Well, looks like tomorrow is finally the day we get to take a sea trial. Apparently when they checked out the trailer it needed extensive work to get the brakes working, so it took a week to get all the parts in and get it fixed. I guess the boat checked out good.

You might want to consider a different dentist if your teeth get knocked out so easily.

I have a Larson 234 escape with the "typical" deadrise of 16 degrees, and have no problems with being knocked around in chop. Would I use it for rough oceans? No, but rough oceans aren't what a deckboat is made for. For a windy Saturday afternoon with a lot of boats out on your local lake, the "typical" deadrise of 16 degrees does just fine.

The guy is asking about a smooth ride. 20 degrees is smoother than 16 degrees. 16 degrees is faster and more stable. Just the way it is. Not knocking your boat, just pointing out differences in ride quality regarding deadrise.

A few more interior pics would be helpful. From what I can see the upholstery looks identical to the el cheapo Sea Ray sport models. Could be the photo is misleading me. That is a huge turn off for me if it is similar. Not a fan of the deck boat but they are starting to grow on me. The 5.0mpi was the optional power for my tiny 18 footer and so my mind tells me there is a mismatch with that boat given the 5.0mpi in my boat model is only a low 50's top end.

The Sea Ray Sundeck series is about the most popular boat available. Super high quality. I am around a 240 Sundeck with the 6.2, and it will pull a slalom skier up at a 9,000 foot altitude lake. The 5.0 is a little light for high altitude, as another poster mentioned. Once you have a Sundeck, there isn't much left to upgrade to.

We had one 220 sea ray 2005 in our rental fleet. it was a nice boat. very roomy for a 22. comfortable and easy to drive. it is not as fast as i wanted it to be with the 5.0mpi but for that boat it is fine. handles well. put 1000 hours on it. keep up with the maintenance as the only problems down the line is really the engine and the drive.
