my father needs to sell his boat and i thought about buying it from him. its a 1990 cruiser 3060 rouge. it has twin 454 mccruisers, generater, ac, sleeps 6, brand new trailer included. it does need some maintence, tune up and cleaning. what do you think its worth? not sure if i would use it much, probably be more of an investment deal. thanks

NADA puts it at around $18K. That's just a very rough estimate, of course. As far as the boat being an investment, unless you get it for free or close to it, it will be a liability. Even if you do get it for free, it could still be a big money loser.

that is one nice boat to be sure! not much clue on value. just two points though...unless it's free, or nearly so, "investment" is not the word I would pick. It ain't gonna gain value. investment in fun or family time, for sure, but you said you would not use it much. Taking up space, and costing money in upkeep for no use would be just a waste, and just letting it sit and rot would be a waste as well. twin 454s are great...as long as gas is not $4 / gal...which it is. IMHO...unless it has great sentimental value (in which case buy it maintain it, and hold on to it at all cost) or you just enjoy throwing away money, you should pass.

why would it be a money loser? and 18k rough estimate is a big profit if it would sell for close to that

i would at least double my money when sold, (reason for investment) and i would love to take it out but like you said not at $4/gal. i might just tune it and clean it just to sell it for my father. not real sure. id love to own it kinda a hard deal to pass up.

ALL boats are money losers...to some extent. Haven't you ever heard the addage "A boat is a hole in the water you throw money into"? or B.O.A.T. = Bust Out Another Thousand ? these saying aren't around for no reason. If you can get it cheap, and flip it high, then you may make some cash...but remember you could get stuck with it, and all it takes is one time to forget to winterize it and you just lost all that money cushion you planned on. and...this is a hard economy, not many are willing to buy marina gas @ $5-6 / gallon, and a 30' boat ain't trailer friendly in many places, so a slip would be required...more expense. just sayin.

Mutual funds are investments. (still waiting on a few of those to break even, though)

Boats are not investments, unless it's free or very cheap and you turn around to sell it soon.
Would you sell dad's boat before depreciation caught up?

I will give you...let's see...$165...14 boxes of assorted Girl Scout Cookies...a half used tube of Burt's Bees chapstick...and some pocket lint for it right now. IF you deliver it to Tennessee for me.

Seriously...that's going to depend on a LOT of factors. You are better off getting a professional appraisal, and look at your local market.

I think a Marine surveyer could tell you the condition and give you a value.
If you did use it; it will go through gas at about 90 gal. per hour at wide open throttle
of course less at less throttle.

Re: what do you guys think??

actually probably closer to 60 or 65 gph.... BUT it will still be EXPENSIVE

The problem is that most folks that can afford the fuel can afford a MUCH newer boat
