Just sold my tri-hull boat a month ago. Don't know where you will be boating... but tri-hulls are very stable boats. However, they do get pretty noisy from choppy water.
Looks like it needs a lot of work! Do you plan on doing it yourself? Make sure you look everything over really well. If the transom hasn't already been done on that old of a boat, it most likly does! (I learned the hard way!) Check the floor and stringers as well. Looks like it was bottom painted, so i am guessing it was kept in the water some - hence my remarks above.
Not sure about how fast it will run. My 1976 18' tri-hull with a 1977 85 HP Johnson could only get on plane when there was only 2 people in the boat and top speed was only 23 mph then.
