What does a compression test reveal?

In looking for a used boat to buy, Im worried that the engine might have some problems. I know about the "check engine for milky oil", as that would prove water is getting in.<br /><br />However, what if the previous owner has recently done an oil change? Would a compression test reveal if water would be able to get into the engine?

Not if it is coming in through the intake/exhaust manifold. Tell them you want to test drive the boat, give it a good running and then check the oil. It usually does not take long for the water to be noticable if it has a problem. I would suggest a test drive anyway.
