Every year when I go to change my lower unit oil, I wind up making a big mess because all I can find is the squeeze bottles and I can never get enough squeezed out without making a big mess. I thought I wold ask if any of you guy's/gal's had the same problem and if so what you did to fix it. Is there a pump system out there or something to get the oil out of the bottle and into the lower unit easier and cleaner than the squeeze method? Thanks everyone......John

There is a little inexpensive manual pump that screws to the top of the oil bottle. Most marinas or boat dealerships stock them.

IMO, these pumps are a must unless you're doing a motor under say 20 or 30hp. Otherwise you end up squeezing the bottle multiple times, introducing air into the lower unit, which displaces oil. If that happens, these air bubbles effectively lower the oil level and greatly increase the risk of melting your lower unit due to lack of oil.

These pumps cost $10-15 or so. Get one. Problem solved

Even Wal-Mart has those pumps (verified this week)

Yes, but the one at Walmart has plastic threads where it screws into the outdrive. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I just can't see that lasting very long.

I've had a Walmart one for around 10 years and it still does the job.

I learned the hard way that the pump you get, get a good one. My first one failed three ways; it needs to (a) reach to the bottom of the supply bottle (b) scew on to the supply bottle and (c) screw into the L/U--so get one that matches your brand motor. Even with this it's a big mess.

Also, at least Yamaha, the LU holds about 34 ounces and the bottle is 32.

It's $15 to replace. How many lower unit oil changes do you do a year? So you only get 5-8 years out of it. If you're careful screwing it in, you won't have any issues.

I got my pump at gander mountain. It was vary cheap. It does have plastic threads but it went in just fine and doesn't leak. Even if it only lasts a few years it was cheap enough that I wouldn't have any hard feelings buying a new one. My motor takes a full quart so I can't imagine tring to squeeze that in without a pump. With the pump I only spilled a few drops when removing the pump to put the plug in.

True, but for a few bucks more you can get a good one with metal threads. My main concern isn't with the replacement cost, just the fact that it'll be messy when the plastic threads give out and you squirt oil all over.

Definitely not a huge deal, but why buy lower quality tools if they're not saving you much money?

Yep, those pumps work great. Mine has plastic threads too, no issues. Just remember, when the lower unit is full, reinstall the top screw first to minimize leaking out the bottom. Mr Obvious.....:)

The plastic won't strip your metal threads.

I prefer using the metal adapters that screw into the drive. Pretty much a necessity on my Volvo Duo Prop and it has an oring as well to eliminate leakage.

Best way to minimize mess? Do your lower unit oil change in late October. I can leave the screws out for 5 minutes before it begins to drip. :D

(Of course - it does take 3 hours to drain fully...)

Remember to change those screw gaskets.
