What does this do? Friction adjuster

Can anyone tell me what the friction adjuster does on the remote control
housing for this 89 Johnson OB 140 hp.?

It's the adjustment for the shifter , you can make it easy to shift in gear or tight ..Your choice ..2 loose it will creep back from wot on rough seas ..You get the idea ..
