Re: what does this mean?

Most likely that your carburetor linkage is not synchronized with your ignition timing advance.
Each engine has a different procedure to set it right.
Which engine?

Get your self a good oem manual for your motor it will take you through every thing you need to do to step by step and save you allot of money in the long run.

Depending on the age of the motor, the factory service manual may have a model-specific step-by-step procedure entitled "Synchronization and Linkage......" It will often be found in the first section of the factory manual along with "Tune-Up Procedure".

Idles too fast, idles too slowly, or won't reach normal WOT RPM. Also, rough running if the carburetors are not synchronized. If the timing part of the process is off, it may not run at all.

Of course this all depends on the carburetors being properly serviced and the components of the ignition system being in good working order.

ok, I have a 35hp 79 evinrude(35952a), won't idle for long, carb rebuilt looks good, passages pass light, good spark, compression 122psi both cyn, I do see some play with the cam, I can move the cam maybe half inch or little more. saw another thread where the key on the throttle arm was broke ( http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=413674&highlight=Synchronization+Linkage ) causing play (slop) how much play should be present (if any) is ok? If I move the throttle a little for more gas, I can keep her running by activating the electric choke on and off but it dies if I stop pressing (turning on and off) the choke

Here in is the reason why you need to read about Link and Sync. If you screw around with settings that you have no idea what they do there is no faster way to screw up your motor and possibly even blow it up.

Simply put, don't go any further, just listen and get a manual on the engine so you know what you are setting. At the very least pay attention to what these fine folks are trying to relate to you. The advice here is free and you can do as you choose. So far the responses are right on and we are trying to help. Please respect that.

Just saying... not trying to be rude, just "matter of fact" talk.
