What does this mean?

I've been on some High performance boat websites before and have heard of people saying they areate(sp) the pad for more speed. What does this mean and how is it done?<br /><br />Just curious!<br /><br />Thanks:<br />Jason

This is just speculation, but I think they are referring to somehow introducing air to the surface of the pad to break the surface tension of the water, reducing drag (or something like that). Scoops ducting air from the top through tubes down to vents or holes, or maybe some sort of air pump or something like that.

they are referring to introducing air at the pad, also called ventilating. you may also see ventilated hulls discussed. it is from the hull design, usually a stepped hull. the hull can have anywhere from 1 to 4 steps, and may also vary in size. i can't think how to describe a stepped hull, but if you google search for it, i'm sure you'll find a picture.<br /><br />fyi, ventilated hulls perform much different than standard hulls. most accidents from performance running is caused by drivers not knowing how to handle these boats.

Also, some performance boaters like the bottom pad area to be slightly rough.... Some of these guys seem to think that by having a slightly rough surface, that causes a break in surface tension..<br /><br />Does it work, I dunno?
