What does this screw do in the control box?

I have a 1978 Ebbtide Dynatrak with a 1978 Johnson 85HP. I had to take the throttle control box's lower cover off to reconnect the throttle cable. I noticed a screw in the top corner of the box. This screw enters the box at an angle to the front and side of the box. It was not tight and did not seem to want to tighten. It felt more like an adjustment screw of some type. My throttle seems stiffer now when in reverse. Any ideas? Thanks, Bert :D

it is to adjust tension on the throttle arm to keep it in place

If you're speaking of a screw that has a plastic knob with which to grip it, that would adjust tension via a brake like lining that presses against the internal drum of the throttle/shift lever. The purpose of this adjustment is to keep the throttle from moving due to viberation. Sounds like you have it slightly too tight.

If however, you're speaking of the plain screw that is at the top front end of the c/box, that would be the idle warm up lever link adjusting screw.

Thanks. I am talking about the plain screw at the top left, not the black knob on the front half way up. In what way does this adjust the warm up lever? The friction or cable length? Thanks, Bert :D

Bert.... It is a stop type screw that restricts the warm up lever from raising the rpms too high. You can set it so that the start up rpms will be at a certain rpm when the lever is at the full up setting.

Thanks. My manual does not cover the control box. This info really helps. Bert :D

Interesting info. I have learned to move the fast idle lever to its maximum setting, then back it off about 1/2". Maybe I can make that a function of that screw.

Charles
(28 years owning OMC products, but never an outboard until this year.) :)
