A couple of posts ago, you were asking about your coil wire. It does not appear this is part of your immediate problem....however, from what you are describing it sounds as if you have another issue waiting to happen. Think you should post a photo of what you've found and it maybe time to replace your ignition wires as well to avert a future breakdown. How does your cap and rotor look??

I agree - that's why I was asking. I'm trying to find a decent source for new wires and would like to replace the cap and rotor just for good measure since I don't know how old they are. When I have a chance I'll post a photo of the coil/wire situation.

Re: What does this sound like?

Ok, I got a chance to test it again after spraying it down thoroughly.

It ran for 61 minutes before I turned it off. It did stall once at 38 minutes, but I simply waited a couple of seconds, turned the key to start and it kicked back on easy as could be. I didn't have to pump the throttle, pour in gas or anything the entire time. It would miss occasionally and did stall that one time, but there were long stretches where it was just smooth as could be - even close to the end of the time frame.

Now I know I could probably still benefit from a carb rebuild or replacement. but I think that it just idled successfully for much longer than I've ever tried to idle it before recently, and I'm ready to take it out on the water to give it a more real world test. Prior to using the carb cleaner I ran it three times, once on the lake, twice on muffs, where it stalled and wouldn't start again after 20-30 min.

I'll let you know how it goes!

Re: What does this sound like?

So after being out of town for a few days I finally got the boat out on the water. I was worried when it stumbled a couple of times about 10 minutes into the day, but then it ran fine for another 2.5 hours from idle all through it's RPM range up to WOT. Didn't have a single problem after that. We'll see how it goes next time, but I'm pretty happy that it seems to be running decently. If it starts giving more trouble I may get into a carb replacement or rebuild, but I'm happy with it for now.

I did replace the plug wires - it turns out the terminal that is supposed to be part of the coil wire had come off and was stuck in the coil itself. It was running this way, but did seem a little stronger once I replaced the wires...
