Re: What does this test tell me? - UPDATE

Hello all, well I ran the test. Top right (#1 I guess) and bottom right (#6??) did not make a difference when I pulled the plug, all others did.

I know that this could mean Fuel, Spark or compression, which is the best place to start?

I also had a post in here earlier on not being able to go over 2000 rpm's and wondered if I had water in the fuel, well I put in all new fuel (not a seperator yet) and went out today, same thing. It was also dying when I first floored it from like 1200 rpm's, sounding like it got flooded type sound. So this is probably my problem I guess, not water.

Appreciate any advice you can provide. Also, what causes something like this, b/c it was running fine, and then this. I pulled those plugs and they look pretty soiled.

I will add that I am using QL77JC4 plugs. I just found out I should be using UL77V or QL16V plugs but havent had time to change them yet, could this be contributing?

Thanks, Scott
Frustrated in Mashpee

First because its easy, check for spark. If you don't have it you know where to start. Next check the compression, if its bad you don't need to fool with other things yet. If you have spark, and good compression you need to look a the fuel system. Since only 2 cylinders aren't working it probably the carbs as opposed to the gas tank or fuel pump.

Prob the carbs. Another note: I de-carbed this morning with Valvetech. My top right carb seemed REALLY reactive to the spray, more than the others, When I sprayed there, it ran better.

So I will begin my trek down Troubleshoot lane, with all of your help of course, thanks.

Carb rebuild kits are real cheap, my question is, is this easy to do? Would I be able to figure it out?

Thanks, I have the SELOC manual.

My '89 Evinrude 150 will throw a spark from the removed wire/boot to the tip of the spark plug on cylinders that are firing properly. If you just hold the boot up near the plug (try it on cylinders you know are sparking so you can see what I'm talking about), a nice, bright blue spark will jump the gap. Like others have warned though, it'll give you a nice little shock if you're not careful! I've received several of these though, and lived to tell about it - must be very low current.

Thanks. Do I do it with the eng running? Pull it off, and hold it back?

here's some health and safety info regarding electics: it only takes a 40th of an amp (or 25mA) to stop ur heart. worst case scenario is to touch a live with one hand and ground with the other hand as the current path goes right across ur chest. best way to test for live if u not sure is with the back of ur right hand. even better way is to use a test instument! dont think an ignition system is capable of producing 25mA at 25000 volts but could b wrong. had a 25KV shock of the back of a TV once. Once only tho lol its taken 25 years to straighten me hair. much better to use insulated tools and great care when messing with high voltage! good luck

Thanks guys. On the spark question, I obviously do that with the engine running right? Didnt know if spark is made when just the key is turned.

Thanks again.

Just some nice to know info. It takes a 140 mA throughthe the heart to cause any trouble, but of course that trouble could be death.

Paul
