What effect would worn reeds have on a '86 evinrude 40hp?

Can't get it to idle. Runs great top end and starts fine but have to feather the thottle or quickly flip the ele. choke to keep it idling. The cards have been rebuilt and work good and compression is 150 on both cylinders.

The only other thing I can think of is the reeds being worn. How would I know for sure?

Reeds don't "wear", they get broken or bent (usually from people messing with them). Reeds are a rare source of running problems, unless a hard object is "inhaled" through the induction system. Who and how were the carbs rebuilt by?

Carbs were soaked and rebuilt by a good mechanic. The idle screw is adjusted all the way end and when it does idle it revs and then slows down over and over. Once in a great while it will idle like it is suppose to for about a minute then dies. I'm using the VRO pump to supply fuel but the oil pump is disconnected and I mix my fuel.

Could it be a faulty VRO fuel pump not allowing enough fuel to idle? Should I replace it with a regular fuel pump? Would a lync and sync help? If so, is there a tutorial on the is site that would help?

My pass time is trolling for muskies but can't enjoy it when I'm messing with the thottle all the time.

The revving up and down may indicate an air leak in the fuel lines. I doubt it is the fuel supply since it runs well at the top end.
Even though the carbs were rebuilt, the idle circuit may still be clogged if they were not very carefully poked, prodded and blown out with solvent and compressed air. The core plug on the top of the carb needs to be removed and the passages underneath cleaned for it to idle properly.

I agree with the air and revving and will end up replacing all the fuel lines. What is throwing me off is using the electric choke at idle to keep it running, seems like it not getting enough fuel at idle. If it was a weak fuel pump wouldn't it be messing up at WOT?

Link 'n' synch is a common cause of such bad behavior.

That object sometimes being a broken reed. They will & do break after so many hours. The result is not pretty ...

No. It is in your Service Manual.

Good luck. :)
