What engine do I have?

My ID numbers are not on the engine mount. Is there another place to find them? I was told it was an evinrude 120 hp 1988, but the year may be wrong because I just ordered a starter that was supposed to fit (586283) and it doesn't.

Is there a tag on the stern brackets?? If it has been painted over, look for the frost plug. Its the size of a quarter, silver and on the motor. It will have the true id numbers on it. Post them and we will get a year for you. Or look on this thread yourself. GL

Thanks! I cannot find any numbers on the mounting bracket. The plug you are describing has #G3565575 on it. This is not like the codes that I saw on the other site you directed me to. This must be a different number?

Can we figure out the engine from that?

I had a short in my harness yesterday that left me stranded 10 miles out. I couldn't fix it before the wind was going to come up. I had to suck it up and call in vessel assist. 15 years and I have never had to do that. But they were great. It would have cost $1100 dollars, but I had the insurance so it was free.
Well $65 for the insurance!!

Thanks for your help on the engine ID...I really need that starter!
