What engine route should I take?

Well, I had the complete parts list ready for my 351W rebuild and the money in the bank ready to go. Along comes a late 80's early 90's ski nautic that the owner wrecked and wants to sell the engine, a 351W. $300 buys the entire thing, turn-key supposedly. So here's the issue, from what I recall, the inboards will all be counter-rotation. I have no problem installing the counter-rotation engine and buying a new counter-rotation SEI outdrive.

My current outdrive is a '76 pre-alpha (233) model and may or may not have issues shifting, but does need at the least a new water pump/impeller/shift shaft seal.

So do I spend $2500 to build a completely new engine and trust that the old outdrive is solid enough with a few minor maintenance items, or do I just go ahead and get the counter-rotation inboard engine ($300) and buy a new outdrive (1400+prop)?

Re: What engine route should I take?

Lot of missunderstanding on "Counter rotation" I might be wrong on this but I dont think any single engine inboard is counter rotation. Some have right hand props and most are standard rotation engines with a left hand turn prop.

You can check firing order to make sure, If it is wired like the numbers on the intake it is standard. if it is not wired like the intake it is a counter rotation engine. please note counter and reverse turn are the same thing. standard and left hand turn are the same thing. if you look at the prop and its a left hand turn check the tranmission If it is a 1 to 1 BW you have a standard turn engine. If its a right hand prop and a PCM 1.26 trans you still have a standard engine. I know you are looking at everything from the rear of the boat looking forward?

Re: What engine route should I take?

I haven't seen the engine yet, and I'm guessing the owner doesn't know standard vs. counter-rotation. I only know that my current engine is standard rotation and many of the pure ski boats (mastercrafts, moombas, etc) use a counter-rotation style engine. I'm sure it has something to to with the type of drive system they are mated to, but I wouldn't know a PCM or Borg-Warner from any other unit as I've never worked on one.

I believe the engine is out of the boat now, but the owner may have a picture of it installed in the boat.

Nevermind guys, I got pictures of the engine, and it appears to be a 302, not a 351. The valve covers have the "188 H.P." on them which screams 302. Oh well, guess it's back to rebuilding the 351W.

I donno,

If I was restoring my previous '66 'Twain,

.......And I had it all apart and was going to make major changes, I think I would even go a step further and switch to a SBC 350 engine along with that SEI drive.........
