Don't even think about rebuilding the engine until you run it to see if the block is cracked. You know it has good compression. If you rebuild it without running it, you may be rebuilding a bad engine or you may be rebuilding a good engine.

I would love to see a boat with this type of drive system restored. It may be outdated, but I just love seeing older vintage engineering still in operation.
Gotcha' covered ... next time I'm in TX, I'll bring the boat :D

t2sunquan: If I were you I wouldn't rebuild the engine untill I ran it in the spring. No sence rebuilding a perfectly good engine. Siera Marine has all the commen parts for that drive (and I prefer their quality fit). GLM has just about every thing else, including new castings. When you winterise it next fall, If there is any sign of water in the upper gear case, take the drive off and turn it over to drain it. The drain plug on that housing is above the lower bearing and if water freezes in it, it will push the seal out and maybe damage the water pump housing. Make shure you check the ball gears (the coupler between the upper gear case and the intermediate housing).
justurvey: I have a '76 with a 190 electric shift for sale. New intermediate shaft and ball gears!

We are getting a warm spell this week. I'm going to attempt to run it on muffs to make sure we are good. I recently just found out the trim motor was completely seized up and will need to be replaced. Other than that I just cleaned the carb and put some fresh gas in to get ready for the ultimate test.

Now the power tilt wont work, i think its jammed. I cleaned the studs on the solenoids real good and even bridged them with a screwdriver, you hear the motor jerk but no go. When it did work it was real "iffy", though i did find out one of the seals behind the gear was bad and it did have water in it. I cleaned it out real good with brakleen am going to put it back together tomorrow. Any suggestions or tips before i slap this thing back together and possibly be disappointed?

If the tilt motor had water in it, you probably need to clean the comutator (where the brushes run on) with sand paper and wipe clean. The bushings should be oiled or a light grease, but not too much! In case you didn't get a manual yet, the clutch housing uses motor oil.
Between the motor and the worm shaft there is a hammer blow coupling. The motor has to get a running start to move the gears, so make shure it is good shape.
Good luck.

I will try that wrench 3, but.. GOOD NEWS. Fired up the engine today, brought it up to operating temp, shut it down for a while, checked the oil and it was not milky! And now the bad news, upon turning the steering left to right if i give the steering wheel a sudden jerk the power steering pump skids on the belt, it also happens when i turn the wheel all the way to the right. Once i hit the end of the "right" steering, the pump locks up and jerks/skids on the belt, but it doesn't do it when i hit hard "left". I assume i would need a new power steering pump? And for the record.. the power steering reservoir was EMPTY when i got the boat, i put some Prestone Power Steering Fluid in it.

Oh and also, the drive went in both directions smoothly. I will check the oil's later on.

Assuming that the belt is adjusted properly, you could try cleaning up the preasure relief valve. The valve is located in the back of the pump where the high preasure hose screws in. With the hose removed, the large nut that it screws into can be removed from the pump. The spring should push the valve out of the bore. Take note of wich way round the valve comes out. The valve must slide freely in the bore to relieve the excess preasure.

wrench, I took your advice and took the valve out, it seemed to be moving in and out freely. Anyways i cleaned it up real good and put it back together, i adjusted the belt so its tight on the pulley.. hopefully this will help. I'll fire it up again tomorrow to see, and hopefully its fixed because its the last day of warm weather it looks like we will have until spring.

It works better than ever now wrench, i tightened the belt and put some belt dressing on it, changed the fluid and it works like a charm. I winterized the engine and drive with marine antifreeze and fogged all the cylinders. Just waiting for the oil seals to come to put the tilt back together then its off to storage it goes for the next few months, I hate chicago.

Thats great news and I know what you mean about Chicago. I think our weather is about the same as yours and I can't weight till spring.
By the way, did you drain the water from the power stearing cooler and pull the large hose off of the water pump on the engine?

Yes i did. I removed both manifold hoses, all four manifold plugs, both petcocks(stuck a small screw driver in and jiggled it around), power steering hose, and the large water pump hose and completely drained them. Then i took compressed air and blew it through the petcocks, manifolds, and power steering hose. Then i took the thermostat housing off with the water pump hose re-connected and poured marine antifreeze straight down until it was good. I put everything back together and poured more antifreeze down the manifold hoses, power steering and whatnot until i heard it coming out of the drive. Took the batteries out, emptied the water/fuel separator, and sprayed all the linkages down with lithium grease. Oh and before all this i filled the tank up and poured a 50/50 mix of Startron and Sta-Bil, shook the boat at bit to mix it, and since i've had it running its been run on the mix.

Some one taught you well. The only thing I do extra is to run the carb dry when the feul water seperator is off. It should be fine with the stabalizer in it. It's just an extra precaution.
Here's hoping for an early spring.
