what engine?

I just picked up a boat and it has an old merc on it. The guy said that it was a 9.9 engine but that it has 6.0 decals on it. Is there a way to find out by the serial number what engine it really is?

The serial number is 2955744

It's for sure a 1970, if it's a 7.5 it will have comet cast in the side of the block and if it's a 9.8 then it will have rocket cast into it. If it really has the 6HP kit on it you will find a restricter plate behind the carb

I pulled the cover off and I found where it said Comet Lightning on the side of the block. Lightning was stamped in the block but comet appeared to be painted on. So it is a 7.5?

Yes, I just went out to the shop and cked a couple of 7.5 they both had lightning cast in the block with a white lettered decal right above saying comet, so yours also must be a 7.5HP also
