Re: what ever happened to true talent?

Used to live down the street from the Wilsons home in Seattle. Never got to hear them play but in Seattle, there was so much other music going on that it did not matter.

I know this is going to sound corny but some of these folks get caught in the machine and get shot out the other end. Look at Mili Vanilie. These two guys could not make the grade singing on their own but they were good looking and could sell videos until they got caught. You never heard about anything bad happening to the record company exec who encouraged them to do what they did but you sure heard about them. I think one killed himself.

You have to really want that much glamour to let the machine eat you.

Re: what ever happened to true talent?

I'm going to put another point of discussion into this thread. I'm heavy into creating a realistic stage with good dynamics in the mobile environment. Most of todays recordings have been done WAY TOO HOT causing them to sound "loud" on a junky stock system but like crap on anything worth having. The speakers I run were designed to hide absolutely nothing in the recording. The custom built amp I have on my frontstage is high current with somewhat of a tube sound to it. The guy that built it is a master at what he does.

Good recordings are worth far more than their weight in gold. Bad recordings I have to really like what's on them to be able to tolerate the audible compression. It's like they max out all the sliders on the sound board and clip the $#!^ out of them.

As for talent, Allison Krouss and Natalie Merchant put me into a chill induced trance. Simply amazing.

The fact is the days of the best music and best cars are gone forever...The 60s. As far a talent goes there are plenty of very talented people out there except only one in maye 10.000 makes any real money and some make money even with no talent.

Way back there, somebody said Taylor Swift can sing...My ears must be outta whack, because I cringe every time I hear her screeching come on the radio.

I was trying to politely ignore the Taylor Swift comment, but alas, I too think she's shrill.

I run karaoke shows and I can make ALMOST anyone sound good. You're right thinking that the sound man does most of the work.

Anyone remember Tiny Tim, Don Ho, Donavan?

On the other side of the coin are Mel Torme and Linda Ronstat, both with perfect pitch.
