What Evinrude Outboard do I have?

Help - not sure what outboard I have (it was given to me, along with the '58 Dorcett Monterey). I can't find a serial #. The outboard cover, at least, belongs to an Evinrude Triumph 55. If the motor was that - I think it would have to be either '68 or '69. However after looking at both '68 & '69 Triumph manuals, I suspect it is neither.
I pulled the flywheel, expecting to find the points. There were none...(electronic ignition??). The wiring harness matches neither the '68 or '69 diagram.
I have taken many pictures - which I am happy to send to anyone who can help sleuth. Many parts of the motor do match the pictures in the manual - so it seems to be 'close' to the Triumph 55 - but still something else...

thanks!!! I know from reading many, many posts that there are very wise folks out there....

There should be a plate attached to the port (left) transom bracket (bkt that attaches eng to boat). Is it missing or possibly just painted over? If it's there, what's the model number?

What color is the electrical plug at the engine?

Does the engine have a shift lever (2 levers, 2 cables), or one lever with 2 cables, or 1 lever with 1 cable?

Does the control box contain push buttons for shifting?

And what you need to find is the model number, not the serial number, to produce an age for the motor. This is the location that Joe was referring to, compliments of FR

model number location.jpg

Also Im not 100 percent sure, but would that vintage have a welch plug, top rear of the motor? The model number would be located there if the stern plate has been removed due to painting , thief, etc...

This is TDs pic of a welch plug.

You can try this site to match the picture.

old-omc.de

It has all the original flyers with pics of all the engines.

Sigh... someone else that got a free engine... Why not me!

Yes, the free motor tree.......

Of course, by the time the boat is running, I don't think it will have been quite free (!!). The '58 Dorcett is wonderful though - the maritime equivalent of a '50s auto. Needs a little restoration, but that's the fun....

Thanks for posts helping me out. I sent a couple private replies with more info/exhange.

Everyone I know knows I work on old outboards... and I still have never shaken from the proverbial tree... sigh... oh well... my time will come! :)

i shook an 1998 aquatron 18' bowrider 4.3 mercruiser, ended up that the engine had been submerged, due to plug being left in it. didn't make a thing on it.

Re: What Evinrude Outboard do I have?

Back to the question, 58 Dorcett sent me pictures. I conclude that he has a complete 1973 65hp powerhead and electrical system on a 1968 55hp lower and hood. No wonder the manuals don't match!
