Re: what filters to use while grinding fiberglass

This post should be DELETED from the thread ASAP !!

It is misleading.

YD.

i cant call it mis leading......however......mis alarming is more like it....

people have been working in glass shops all of thier lives.......i dont know of any that have died from lung cancer, or any other serious illness form it.......remember...this is 60 years of history.

its the booze that is in the industry that kills them.

however........wear a good mask....not a paper filter type.....one with cartriges....
i like a full face mask for anything other than painting.

With all due respect YD, it appeared informative to me and backed by the Illinois Department of Public Health, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and a medical doctor. But like I said, "Even around the garage with the one off projects, a mask is probably a good idea…why take the risk for something you can buy for under $100?"

dunno...just sayin.

Yea..Consumer Product Safety is nothing like OSHA .. :) ..

The link you suggested is for Fiberglass installation .. like putting insulation in your House !!

Has nothing to do with Fiberglass and resin .. so your link is Bogus do us Boat guys ..

Sure..good link for insulation guilds ..but not for us that mix up some nasty crap on a Daily basis ..

I'm trying to understand how direct quotes from internet articles are "misleading"
This does not appear to be misleading to me. Very clear and to the point.

I have to Snip the quote you have there Woody ..too long for me..

Again..its just for Roofers or Insulation installers .. has Nothing to do with the resins we have to use/grind/mix or otherwise.

I would have though you would be the first to suggest a full face for Painting ... I was wrong I guess..

We use some Nasty stuff in boat building .. its not insulating a roof top LOL ..

Again.. I suggest you Delete the above or modify it with some OSHA standards regarding some Nasty stuff when you use these chemicals..

I rest my case ..

Re: what filters to use while grinding fiberglass

Fiberglass is glass-reinforced plastic--roofs, insulation, boats...it is all fiberglass, however in grinding on a boat restoration, the fiberglass has been mixed with epoxies, solvents, etc. That said, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University and the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania both write on the debate about fiberglass' cancer-causing effects. The colleges cite studies on laboratory animals exposed to fiberglass particles. Each suggest further research on the topic. The Fiberglass Information Network cites studies by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health showing that glass fibers could damage cellular mechanisms and DNA. These changes could promote the growth of cancer cells in the body. I have also read the OSHA standards and they echo the results unless someone can find something else.

So the answer is unknown. Still using a mask makes sense. I worry more about the epoxy and solvents used than the fiberglass.

I also think it's great how YD is so passionate about this topic. Personally, I think this debate will educate a lot of newbies and some oldies. :)

Re: what filters to use while grinding fiberglass

Nobody wants to answer ?? ok.. lemme give you an example of why the above is incorrect for what we use for Marine repair ( with resins ) ..

GP Resin .. direct from 3m ( which is basically the same stuff your going to get from anyone ).

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/...0000_nid=GS2BKFJ6V0gs9FJFL5HG9DglFDKSRBBQKBbl

Ok..now we have our resin .. but what is it .. How does this affect me you say ??

Look at the MSDS sheet .. Same product mind you .. ( Im not going to post the whole content of the link due to Copyright laws ) ..

"Material Safety Data Sheet
Copyright, 2011, 3M Company All rights reserved. Copying and/or downloading of this information for the purpose of properly
utilizing 3M products is allowed provided that: (1) the information is copied in full with no changes unless prior written agreement is
obtained from 3M,
and (2) neither the copy nor the original is resold or otherwise distributed with the intention of earning a profit
thereon."

Read full MSDS here ..

http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawebserver?mwsId=SSSSSuUn_zu8l00xM8tenxmxMv70k17zHvu9lxtD7SSSSSS--

I dont think you have to go much further then section 3. However I suggest you Read the whole document to get a feeling of what we are dealing with.

Remember..this is ONLY one can of resin.. not the other stuff like acetone,styrene,mek/mekp, monomers ETC..

Long sleeve shirts, goggles, and some dust particle mask will not cut it !

As far as the filters.. you have 2 kinds. Organic and Pre-filters.

The Organics take out the micro fumes..the Fuzzy filters are there for surface area to catch larger particles before they reach the organics ( Dont clog your organic filters basically ).

If your smelling something through your respo..then I suggest a better fit or a clean shave. :) ..

OH..there is one other thing.. I dont know why..but a 'Traf' ( spell it backward ;) ) will go through most respo filters. Got me on this one :) ..

Peace ..
