Hi,

I'm mainly a Mercury guy...and I understand triggers and stators. But; I've been looking at a 1971 Evinrude (60173C) that has an expensive ignition component called a CLIPPER. I've never heard of a clipper.

Can someone popint me in the direction of an explanation of how this particular ignition system functions...and; in particular....tell me what the CLIPPER does?

Are there any downloadable service manuals for these engines?

Thanks, Chuck

Clipper circuit supposedly prevented surges created by charging circuit. IN reality, it created more problems than what it cured. OMC later issued a bulletin to remove the clipper altogether as it wasn't needed in the first place.

High voltage will destroy the igniton amplifier. The clipper "clips" the voltage peaks at a safe level. The main source of high voltage is loose or dirty battery connections, or a crummy battery. Maintain your system correctly and you probably don't need to worry about it.

Rapair, now CDI Electronics told me many years ago to get rid of the clipper as it was more harmfull to the power pack than without it.
