what fuses for which items....

I'm redoing a mess of an electrical system. Luckily its on a small pontoon and only has a few electrical items. Off hand I think they are:

nav lights
horn
radio
trim
starter (not sure if thats separate)(40 hp merc)
docking lights
led courtesy lights (to be installed)
lighted tach guage
lighted trim gauge

i think thats pretty much it. So with knowing that, what size fuses should these things have on the fuse panel?

fuses protect wiring. Trim/starter/lighted gauges should be on the engine harness and fused under the cowling. All the rest use 5 to 10 amp fuses except docking lights which you will have to give a wattage before you can size the fuse.

Re: what fuses for which items....

my brother gave me a set of fog lights from a car, that I guess would work (especially for free). They are 55w.

-And once i actually ripped the panel apart I did notice I only had a few wires in there just for nav lights, radio, and horn. Those are all using 10 watt at the moment but the tube type and everything is corroded pretty bad. Just wanted to make sure those fuses were correct since the last owner "rigged" a lot of stuff up that needs correcting.

Any idea what size fuse for those lights?

55w x 2=110w
110w/12v=9.16 amps

A 10 amp fuse doesn't allow enough margin for error, so go with a 15. Go with at least 14 gauge wire for this circuit.

I have those rectangle black rocker switches. Do I need a relay or can i run straight to the switch

That depends on the rating of the switch. Also, long wire runs may lead to a noticeable drop in voltage (and therefore, brightness). There tables that give % voltage drop for a given gauge wire of a given distance.

It's a used boat so not sure on switch rating. Given the info above could you tell me the proper switch to get to not need a relay. It will be approximately 15ft of wire and will use 14ga as recommended above

on the side of the switch it should say something like "dc 30a" which shows that it can handle 30amps dc. You need a switch that can handle 20 amp dc. Most switch's are rated 20 to 30 amps dc

Re: what fuses for which items....

bobbo268: I feel your pain. Am currently repairing / correcting / upgrading the circuits in my boat. The wire size, fuse type and amperage rating, and voltage drop things can be confusing. Here are a couple thoughts that might help.

Blue Sea has an easy to use circuit wizard on its site to help determine wire size. If you input your situation's data (12 VDC, 15' circuit, and 10 AMPs) the calculator advises size 12 AWG is appropriate to keep voltage drop < 3%, though there is nothing "wrong" about using size 14 AWG. It is just a matter of the % voltage drop you are willing to accept.

Secondly, a fuse or breaker does not necessarily open a circuit exactly when the amperage is reached. A 10 AMP fuse might not open until 11.5 to 12 AMPs. Unfortunately it can be the devil's own work to determine the amperage "cushion" a specific fuse might permit. The general rule I am following to size fuses is to add a 15% amperage "cushion" and then round up to the next commonly available fuse size PROVIDED (and this is really important) the manufacturer of the load device does not recommend a lesser AMP fuse, which is common for things like trolling motors, fish finders, etc., AND PROVIDED the fuse size is < the wire's AMP rating. For your situation I second the 15 AMP fuse suggestion.

Cannot help with the switch thing. Switches are one of the things that are, thankfully, OK on my boat - so far.

Re: what fuses for which items....

Thanks for the help. Last question I hope. .. If I am running the 14ga to the fuse panel for the docking lights, and the power wire from the battery to the fuse box is only 14ga, is that Ok or should I change that too?

Switch is 20amp so that is Ok.

I would make that wire from the battery to the fuse box 10 or 8. You also need a fuse/breaker near the battery to protect that wire that goes to the fuse box.
