1972 IL6 1150-

Im replacing the gaskets on the exhaust manifold cover/baffle plates as they were leaking water.

After cleaning them up they appear to have corroded at the bottom, thus being the reason for the leak.... The corrosion is not very bad however, is enough to compromise the gasket mating surfaces. Is there a compound that can be used to assist in this seal.... I have a clear RTV sealant but I understand that there may be high temperatures and pressures around this area.

Many Thanks

Stan.........

Yes there are several types of gasket sealants out there...

Auto parts stores should have what you need...

hello
if they are corroded that bad they should be replaced. if you must reuse them use a sealant like OMC adhesive type M

Re: What gasket dressing?

Thanks for the reply guys, in Scotland none of the marine dealers have heard of OMC type M. They had a silicone based sealant called "instant gasket" and RTV sealant which I already have. Would any of these do the job?

Re: What gasket dressing?

Stant, I would use the "instant gasket" stuff as long as it will hold up to higher temps and water of course.

I'm not really sure about using pure RTV silicon sealant... It "may" remain too flexible for that application... I may not be correct, but I have used RTV silicon for other applications and to me it may just be too soft after curing.
Someone else may correct me, but that's my two cents....

Re: What gasket dressing?

That's probably just fine. I'd go for something in the 400F range... So 260C should be ok...

What sort of temps are we talking about here. The best I can get will withstand up to 260.C

Is this exhaust baffle plate not the hottest part of the engine??

Stan

Re: What gasket dressing?

Thanks for the reply KC..

I need to be very confident that this will work the first time. I cant take any chances...

I know that the exhaust manifold on my car exceeds 500.C so i would expect the manifold on the outboard to get very hot too.

Does anyone know what temp the manifold on these outboards actually gets to?

With water running through it probably around 200F near the mating surfaces....

I use Permatex black. Torque them to 150 inch pounds.

If you pull that innermost plate around the ports ( hopefully not) use permatex red and torque to 180 - 200 in three steps.

-W
