we launched the boat, got it started and took off. All was fine and went to increase throttle and it was fine for a few seconds and then losy power and died, never to start again. Removed cover and it was smoking. Wife said when I increasesd throttle motor was raising out of water (forgot to lock motor with trim pin) but she never told me it was raing out of water until it died. Got towed back in. Did the motor seize up or did it burn up impeller or what? What am I looking at here repair wise? thanks lphotolin

Well Ipotolin....really makes a bad day don't it?

The engine itself should not raise up while under way. It should not be locked down. This is to let the motor raise up in case you hit an underwater opstruction.....kinda' saves the transom. So....could we explain a little more about the engine raising out of the water?

If the engine was smoking, probably over heated. If you got no alarm horn warning you of the condition, then the horn is bad or the temp sensor.

You need to find out if it will still turn by removing the lid and rotating the flywheel by hand clockwise. If it's free, get some compression readings. This will tell you if there is any real damage done. Sometimes an engine can over heat and shut down with no damage. But you need to confirm this with compression tests.

If the block is good, I would replace the impeller and t-stats at a minimum and find out why the warning horn did not operate.

Can you tell us a little about the engine....is it new to you or have you had it for a while?

Actually I was looking at this boat to buy, The other day I was at the home of the seller and it was running ok (with water going to engine) when an alarm horn did sound off and would not go off! I did not know that it was some type of alarm. my wife and I took it out today and it wasn't running long when it went off again. and it was shortly after that it died and did not restart.

I'm certain that the motor came up because the "dead" engine can no longer push against the water, but the foreward momentum of the boat with still push on it. Thats what happended when my 71' 60hp overheated. The motor will come out of the water just like it would if you hit something...

If it will not restart and isnt seized at all i suspect that the compression numbers will be way off. An engine can't idle if the compression isnt even enough, thus it wont even start.

At least you had a warning horn...mine either wasnt working and was non-existant.
