Re: What Happened?

Okay!!! I got the compression readings on the engine. THe readings for the first, second and third cylinders were 120. Good for an 83 i think.THen the fourth cylinder was 10. After i poured some engine oil in the cylinder, it went up to 15. Rebuild???

Re: What Happened?

Yeah definitely a rebuild. Fortunately for you it might not be too expensive if you're a do it yourselfer kinda guy. Others know more than me but one of the determining factors is probably just getting the bare powerhead apart. If you have rusted or seized bolts it'll be a nightmare to strip down for a proper rebuild. You'll also have to consider the time it will take. I'm very mechanically inclined with tons of tools but it still took me forever to get my engine running correctly. Lots of mistakes. You gotta weigh those options. Don't know what else to say... It would be sad to throw a motor away because of one bad cylinder, that would be my logic. Is it a salt or fresh water motor?

Its a freshwater motor. I think that it is worth it because the cylinders are good, but the motor is so old. How much do you think that it would cost?
Thanks

Re: What Happened?

Parts, go to brownspoint.com they have parts sheets and you can figure out the cost. I would imagine if you can get all the bolts out its definitely worth redoing. You might as well rehone all the bores though as well, it sounds the other will need to be rebored. So new rings, 1 new piston, misc other parts, gaskets, labor for a rebore & honing, $400+ to have a good motor again. But after you do all this make sure you either do premix or be 110% sure that the oiling system is working. I'm currently doing a little of both. If you read further down you'll see I brought back my dt30 from the trash heap.

Re: What Happened?

well, i found out that the bottom piston has a hole in the top of it. But is there a way to replace the piston without tearing it down completely? I just want to know.
thanks

Re: What Happened?

Wow, a hole in the piston??? this is a 2 stroke? As Rodbolt told me, you gotta tear the puppy down to see whats damaged. I'm sure it ain't just the piston. Sorry, but I think you gotta go all the way or scrap it... To answer your question you have to get to the piston by stripping the powerhead off and pulling the pistons out from the piston crank, that means splitting the powerhead, pretty much a complete teardown. But fear not if this is your first time it can be really fun seeing how these things are built. Good luck.

Yeah, its a two stroke. I really don't know what made the hole in the piston, could be starting fluid i guess.do they have sleeves for suzuki cylinders?
thanks

And also, do you think that i can use pistons from a 115, i think that they are the same motor.

Re: What Happened?

Your asking the wrong guy. All I can say is mine had sleeves but that was a dt30 not a dt140. If its the same block I think you could use the same pistons but depending on how worn your piston walls are you might need an oversized, I don't know. I'm clearly not an expert, just someone who's been much further than your average joe. If you want to make this work, you really have to do this the right way otherwise you'll be wasting your time. Tolerances on these engines go down to .01 mm thats almost as thin as a sheet of paper. You definitely need a manual. Some things you'll need a mechanic to check for tolerances and such. Its kinda a long road but worth it if your patient and willing to learn. Good Luck

BTW if you have a hole in the piston, my quess would be you got a much bigger problem going on in there. I would bet there would be alot that needs to be replaced, like bearings, crank seals, etc. Be ready to possible scrap or pay for expensive parts once you tear it down. Suzuki stuff ain't cheap.

its a complete teardown to replace a piston and re-machine the cylinder

Re: What Happened?

And1fixer - My bet is that the problem was caused by water being sucked into and injested into the bottom cylinder.

Re: What Happened?

so, having water being sucked into the cylinder could cause a hole in a piston?

Re: What Happened?

Having a lean condition on that cylinder can put a hole in a piston.

Of course incorrectly set ignition timing can also cause this.

But unless other pistons are starting to show the effects of detination, I would probably concentrate on a lean condition.

So that being said, even after rebuilding the powerhead, unless the cause is properly determined and corrected, the same thing can easily happen all over again.

Re: What Happened?

thanks.I got the powerhead disassembled today. Loks like the whole exhaust plate needs to be replaced because i broke off ten bolts in it and a corner of it too, but the bottom cylinder feels a little rough. I think that the piston ring failed because it was melted into the piston and a corner of the piston was burned. Im thinking about buying a new block and getting it done that way.Any thoughts?
thanks.

Re: What Happened?

Ask Rodbolt. I guess hes been MIA for a while but He'll get you squared away. I think a powerhead'll cost you alot though unless you get it off of errr Ebay? or Iboats if they have one. Better asses the costs and see if its worth going forward.

Re: What Happened?

Just a thought, but based on the age of the Suzuki, you might be better off parting it out on Ebay and buying another good used outboard of similar power. Its going to cost you a chunk of time and money and when its completely rebuilt its only going to be worth $200 (NADA avg retail). You can probably get that much for the lower unit on Ebay if you're patient.
