Re: What happens when manifolds/risers fail?

I found risers and manifolds by GLM for $385, which is hard to pass up. Is there another source for these items that are similar in price? I cant find anything.

Although I have no personal experience with GLM risers and manifolds, I think you need to ask yourself why they are so much less expensive then the competition.

Many times there are good reasons why apparently similar components cost more from one manufacturer to the other (aka, you get what you pay for).

While I agree with you on that, these GLM risers/manifolds are supposed to be made using a better process then other brands out there?

Look at reviews for GLM on this site... Horrible.

there is a reason why they are soo cheap. Fact is on ebay. ebaisicpower edits out the name on the manifold cause i assume they dont want people seeing it.

Go with Osco or OEM

Ebasic power lists them as GLM manifolds- but I understand what your saying. I did a search on here and saw a couple things bad, and some good. Guess I need to do another search.

Re: What happens when manifolds/risers fail?

Did a good search on the web, a lot of guys seem to like them, and some others dont. This seems to be more like a Ford Vs Chevy debate the more I read into it. The story seems to be that if the mounting surfaces are true, your fine. It seems easy enough to check with a straight edge and anything you cant see with that will be taken up by the gaskets.

Anyone talk to this guy named Dennis in California who sells these on ebay?

Just talked to Dennis, seems like a nice guy. Shipping to Maine is $110 OUCH. He said the problems you read about on the net is problably due to all the DIY types who dont prep the mating surfaces before install (removing paint for example).

My manual says you should rod out the passages and can even soak them in muriatic acid to get the corrosion loose prior to and after the scrubbing.

How do ya'll feel about this method? I couldn't use it on my shot manufolds and risers. They were way to bad from years of neglect prior to my inheriting my boat.

try this website. www.marineengineparts.com I ordered my new manifolds and risers from them and shipping was very reasonable. Very helpfull staff also. I like to talk to a real live person before I make a large purchase such as these.

8 years in salt water I'd say it's time, if you're going to take it apart to do gaskets, just replace the whole mess...and as far as GLM, what my mechanics say about them is that GLM stands for:

GOOD
LUCK
MARINE

Go with Osco if you want aftermarket.

Re: What happens when manifolds/risers fail?

Alright, I pulled one of the risers off and had a look- not nearly as bad as I had thought they would be for being 9 years old! The manifolds didnt look bad either. I will snap some pics here in a bit to get your thoughts on them, wasnt a bad job at all, took about 20-25 minutes to yard it out.

Here it is right off the engine:

Cleaned up:

The gasket surfaces are like new. The gasket was a graphite type, my previous boats had a paper type, which seemed to be junk.

Anyway- I think they look good. It was too hard to get a pic of the exit portion of the riser, but that is totally clear with nothing even there. So, I feel pretty confident I can get another season out of these, so long as the other riser looks the same.

What do you guys think? I know I cant see the interior walls, but the lack of crud makes me think there isnt much degrading of the walls.

Re: What happens when manifolds/risers fail?

I would change them out. There looks like rust spots in the exhaust which is a sign of water. Thats what your valves are ging to look like if your getting salt water in the exhaust.
