what have i done omc cobra stern drive

well i went to drain the rear drive and noticed paint chipping around a sticker so i peeled off the sticker and there is a screw so when i was going to drain the water i unscrewed that screw well when i tried to put it back there is nothing there for the threads to grab on too. and now i look at my manual closer that was not adrain plug anyway i cant find out what it is because its not in any of the books i have its on the port side of upper housing. water did come out of it though. help me please

You've just joined the "Duh" Club, from OMC,.... Cobra chapter.....

There's alittle plate that was on the other end of that Screw,.....
Now it's laying on the top of your Lower unit,....
You'll have to Split the case, find the plate, put it back,+ reassemble the drive......

I don't remember that I've ever seen the Reason that Screw,+ Plate are there,....
But ya still gotta Fix it.....

now ya gotta remove the drive, find the little nut, looks flat and reinstall it.
look at it this way, now ya get to catch up on drive maint anyway.
but that screw has to be in place for operation
and your not the first one ever done that

When you get it back on, JB weld the screw slot, so you or anyone else never tries to take it off again.

You might want to consider purchasing an OEM service manual (NOT aftermarket) and do some reading BEFORE you screw things up by not knowing what to do.

The drive has to come off, you don't have to split the upper and lower but that tab that the screw threads into will be lying in the cavity inside of where you removed it. Mine (1988) only has the screw on one side (right side as you face it) the other side has some kind of plug but there is no hole thru to the inside of the passage.
